I'd like to listen to something like Dissection's Reinkaos and Clayman/Colony era In Flames. Basicly Göteborg stuff that has folkish melodies and mid tempo, plus great production too. You get the idea, recommend something

INSOMNIUM :notworthy And of course Scar Symmetry, though you'd have to have been living under a rock recently to not have at least heard of them :D

Insomnium and Scar symmetry are good "newer" bands of the style, but I´ll go with P-E and give praise to not only the best melodic death metal record ever, but also one of my favorite albums in general. The gallery is simply a masterpiece from beginning to finish. Anything from Dark Tranquility is great too, but the gallery is undoubtedly their best to me

I'll check Thirdmoon, In Slumber and Mercenary. Every band else I already know of. Thanks for suggestions!
BTW which are their best albums?

Evergrey is great, but not really as 'death' as the other bands mentioned so they just fall under melodic metal. Scar Symmetry has to be the most overrated band since GnR as far as I'm concerned. Make sure that you have the early Soilwork stuff, all of Dark Tranquillity's discography, and of course Slaughter of the Soul.

Subterannean, The Jester Race and Whoracle from In Flames I also recommend.

But still, as I said before The Gallery is to me the Göteborg king album.

totally forgot abut soilwork, great band much like In Flames but IMO much better (not a big IF fan). Evergrey isn't really death so to speak but they have that Gothenburg sound which the OP mentioned, so in that sense Evergrey does somewhat fit, maybe not as well as some others but they do fit.

if this is not strictly about famous bands, a will make use of shameless self promotion, check my band hehe, www.myspace.com/solitudespace

to that standard, be sure to check out my band, in the sig below. Orchestra Melodeath, not so much death all the time, but its in the vein.

Mercenary, I would recommend "The Hours That Remain" and a close second "Architect of Lies". "11 Dreams" is good, especially the self-titled track, but the overall album doesn't compare to THTR.

^ Well Fiction is a lot different. A lot more modern.

I'd say The Gallery is to Shakespeare poetry as Fiction is to a great modern movie.
Both great works of art, but The Gallery has something ethereal, transcendental to its riffs and overall energy.

(IMHO of course!)
