I just started exploring this genre after listening to In Flames's Lunar Strain, Subbterranean, Jester Race, and Whoracle albums. I also listened to Dark Tranquillity and Arch Enemy, and I think they're pretty good. What other bands would you recommend for me to listen to?

I used to be hugely into Melodic Death Metal, and my interest in the mid nineties Swedish scene has recently returned. These are my recommendations, with those in bold being quite easily the best the genre has to offer:

A Canorous Quintet - Silence of the World Beyond
Ablaze My Sorrow - If Emotions Still Burn
Amon Amarth - Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds
At the Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours
At the Gates - With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness
Cardinal Sin - Spiteful Intents

Ceremonial Oath - Carpet
Crown of Thorns - Eternal Death
Decameron - My Shadow...
Dissection - The Somberlain
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Embracing - I Bear the Burden of Time

Eucharist - A Velvet Creation
Eucharist - Mirrorworlds
Excretion - Voice of Harmony
Gates of Ishtar - A Bloodred Path
Godgory - Sea of Dreams
Infernal Gates - From the Mist of Dark Waters
Lord Belial - Unholy Crusade
Miscreant - Dreaming Ice
Necrophobic - The Nocturnal Silence
Necrophobic - Darkside
The Moaning - Blood From Stone
Sacrilege - Lost in the Beauty you Slay
Unanimated - Ancient God of Evil

But of course, the greatest melodic Metal album to emerge from Sweden is, and always will be, Sacramentum's Far Away From the Sun.

That list will serve me well too, I've been meaning to explore the more melodic end of the spectrum. I actually just won The Moaning on eBay today.

Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns

In Flames - Black Ash Inheritance (1997 MCD)
In Flames - Lunar Strain
In Flames - The Jester Race

Insomnium - Above the Weeping World
Saturnus - For the Loveless Lonely Nights
Saturnus - Martyre
Saturnus - Paradise Belongs to You
Saturnus - Veronica Decides to Die

bout covers it

Eh, Saturnus is pushing it...more doomy than most, Insomnium sometimes as well.

Regardless, they are good...here are a few more recs:

Cipher System - Central Tunnel 8 (modern w/ electronics, etc.)
Holymarsh - In The Holymarsh (great melo-death from S. Korea)
Holymarsh - Infliction Ov The Morbid Intention (excellent stuff!)
Detonation - An Epic Defiance (epic and inspiring stuff)
Detonation - Portals To Uphobia (like the other album)
Dawn Of Dreams - Darklight Awakening (for Sacramentum fans!)
Zonaria - Infamy And The Breed (for Hypocrisy fans!)
Cidesphere - Interment (Turkish[?!] melodic DEATH metal!)
Furia - Un Lac De Larmes Et De Sang (impressive theatrical MDM)
Disarmonia Mundi - Fragments Of D-Generation (of course)
Omnium Gatherum - Spirits And August Light (emotional melo-death)
Compos Mentis - Fragments Of A Withered Dream (symphonic)
Compos Mentis - Gehennesis (symphonic)
Mictlantecuhtli - Pillars Of Science (black/thrash influenced MDM)

I'm sure I'll come up with more...

Isn't SOTLB black metal?

I much prefer "The Somberlain", but I too have never heard of it being called MeloDeath. I guess they have a refined sound that's not hard to appreciate though & it's always a good recommendation.

I'm not very good with this MeloDeath stuff, but here goes. Sounds to me like you would like Bodom/Norther. I have them in my MeloDeath folder & they're not going anywhere despite the many labels they could fall under.

Children of Bodom - Something Wild
Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper
Wintersun - s/t
Norther - Dreams of Endless Wars
Norther - Mirror of Madness
Arch Enemy - Black Earth
Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes
Carcass - Heartwork

Meh, I suck at MeloDeath. Everything else I've heard from it wasn't all that great, but I too could use some of these recs. I probably need some Hypocrisy more than about anything so far. I like to work my way into the obscure stuff within genres.

Arsis - A Celebration Of Guilt
Arsis - A Diamond For Disease (EP)
The Absence - From Your Grave
The Absence - Riders Of The Plague
Mors Principium Est - The Unborn

Can't think of anymore that haven't been suggested. :|

That list will serve me well too, I've been meaning to explore the more melodic end of the spectrum. I actually just won The Moaning on eBay today.

Damnit! That's where that shit went. I saw that and was meaning to buy it some time in the near future.

Good job Faint, I strongly second both of the Arsis mentions, as well as the Mors Principium Est mention.

Check out Daylight Dies (a little doomish).
