record-a-riff thread anyone?

My illegal version of cubase isn't fully functional, so I still just use cooledit pro 2- works for me anyway. I liked that clean thing, could be a very nice background- I'll try to think of some stuff to add to it later on. Here's one of my more Opethy riffs that I haven't used in a song yet. I was kinda planning to harmonize another rhythm guitar on this one to give it a nice thick sound and actually almost went ahead and just did it on this but I decided to just post a plain riff with no drums and no layering so it would work better for the context of what we're doing and all thatr jazz. If the distortion detracts too much from it I can record it clean tomorrow with an acoustic- I'm using an emg loaded guitar right now for a different song so cleans would be crap, and I can't be bothered switching guitars just for this.

Alright, 2nd set of rhythm tracks are done. Just have to revise one riff tomorrow (quite amazed at how shoddily I played it), then it's just clean parts, solos and mix. It seems like I'm gonna get the brunt of the work done this weekend.

A few mistakes, its a very rough mix, but the tone is pretty nice me thinks :hotjump:

Yeah, your tone is pretty good, but try setting the treble down just a little bit. :)

and some stuff that could have been pulled from a bad Morningrise or Orchid outtake.

I really like that one. It sounds alot like the riffs on morningrise.
Work on that one.

This thread should be stickied and renamed.

Agreed.

Btw: This is my first post.

I enjoy that I am speculating that you guys are fickled about your own work, and I see alot of "ya, it's ok, did a half assed job, meh, whatever, it sounds ok I guess"

You guys are very gray and dull. :p

Well, those won't be my adjectives. I'm still working on the cover. Hope to get it done by the coming weekend. It really depends how long the mix stage will take (I imagine a few days, because I'm still to find a rhythm sound I'm happy with).

Hey this is sounding awesome guys, we really need to piece together a song. I was just wondering how you guys record your stuff, you just line it in to the mic input? When I try that it just gives it the most horrible tone I've ever heard and goes really muddy.. Check out some of my bands shitty demo recordings (Opeth inspired), http://www.myspace.com/pandemicreality I wanna layer them up but it just sounds terrible.

Here's what I have
random riffs

It's midi but with guitar and drums soundfonts so in a whole it sounds slightly better, though most of you can probably tell it's not real instruments playing. I can't record distortion guitars cuz it sounds muddy so that's the reason I made it in the midi format instead. I know it kinda violates the thread starter's intention since it's not literally recorded, but if any of u happen to like a certain riff in the song, i can certainly record it. If not, well thanks for checking it out anyways.

haha! the midi gives it such a different sound! Actually, that soft riff is freakin sweet. - right after the one minute mark it starts up.
