Recording Drums - A Journey

Hey Felix! Here's a snippet of the drums I recorded last october ( the pic you commented on facebook), with the guitar pro backing track :p. Absolutely no processing, though I wonder if the toms are Superior or the original in this clip, ( on the EP it's 100% natural).It was my first time recording drums. The song is in the EP of the band I created a thread ( Eyeless), we're supposed to receive the final master tonight, so I'll post the link for download tonight or tomorrow. The kick sounds weird in this clip though.

Kick= Beta42
Kick beater= 441
Snr top= 57
Snr bot= Beta57
Toms= 421
OHs= 4050
Ride: 451
Room: 414s

My workflow has tended to be record real drums, and layer the snare and kick. Not straight replacement, but doubling up. It can sound great, and can retain the humanity.

Wow sounds great!
Could you tell more about the PG81? I also recorded our drummers Overheads with it and it doesnt sound like that....
Would be great if you could tell some more about how many and were you placed them :)

Yeah I also struggle with getting a good overhead sound. You really need to mess with placement (of the kit in the room, atm my kit is in a corner; and placement of the overheads, I used to have it too far=messy and harsh, then too close=unbalanced and still harsh :/ now its in between and the harshness has gone away somehow.). I'll take some photos for you. But for now, here are some raw clips

Room (single 57, 1.5m from the kit, about 1.5m up pointing down at the snare. Processing was very slight EQ I think just a highpass, and saturation and some pumpy compression): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/324723/rawRoom (2).mp3

OHs (2 PG81's, placed above the splash/hihat on left, crash/ride on right. Processing was highpass at 100hz and a big, deep, wide scoop at about 250hz cos its REALLY muddy otherwise, as you can hear here): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/324723/rawOHs.mp3

I own REALLY high end drum gear, and like to think i'm extremely versatile, good at getting drum sounds, and solid. when i have more recording gear, i will be posting samples of myself playing with no quantizing or sample replacement.
i like to think drums could be my strong point as that's all I've been focusing on for the the last 6 or so years of my life, recently focusing on guitar and vocals.

Wow thanks for sharing it, dude! It´s very clear sounding, I like it. Would be interesting how it sounds mixed, so keep us updated :) Each element sounds pretty "expensive". Awesome gear!

Thanks a lot morgan, also pictures would be great! :headbang:
I couldnt record roomsound at the time we did the drums, I thats a huge reason why it doesnt sound like it should.
Yeah I hear what you mean with the EQ...was the same at the OH of my drummer...
If I manage to get such a overheadsound with 2xPG81 and 1x57 it would be great....cause I think the last time I the PG's were too far away (messy as you said)...
