Romeo steals work?

That having been said, I don't think Symphony X is being dishonest in any way. The music is considered "public domain" and isn't required to be cited. They aren't trying to trick or deceive anyone into thinking they wrote anything either. The name of the band alone gives you some indication of what they are about. I don't think it's anything to be concerned about.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I'm sure that Mike isn't trying to take any credit for "originating" any of these parts he's put together. He's a big fan of classical music and likes to incorporate it into his own music. And the fact that he doesn't change much shows he's not going to try to pass it off as a mere coincidence. However, he should make some mention of where the inspiration came from. Even though the original composers are dead, they still deserve credit. And it would be interesting for those of us who aren't big classical people to find the classical piece and hear it. I now want to check out "Dies Irae"! Anyone know where I could get a clip of it off the internet?

it doesn't matter to me if their songs are based on classical pieces or not. I love their music!I think that one thing is plagiarize a song, and another is your influences. many times we listen bands or guitarrist that smells like "X" (being X another famous band- guitarrist). We can't deny our influences. They guide our compositions!

...I can only say Michael Romeo and Michael Pinella love classical music, and they should teach DreamTheater, how to orchestrate a song.

ok, romeo and pinella are great at orchestrating....but...U CAN´T SAY THAT TO DT!!!....i guess u haven't their "six degrees..." album...there are INCREDIBLE orchestrating in that 42' song....it's awesome...

I know "Six Degrees", and the orchestations arent good due to the lack of feelling. Listening to "Trascendence" or "The Odyssey" (Song) you see the big difference, i mean Romeo and Pinella know what they are doing, they have studied musical theory since they were kids. At least SymphonyX dont play "Master of Puppets" :erk: on their concerts....

Just to let you know (not bashing you), DT has been studying music theory since they were kids too. But Romeo and Pinella are way better at composition. Music theory has nothing to do with your ability to write melodys, or arrange music. They are 2 separate skills. I do agree with you on SX orchestration and 6 degrees. I like the 6 degrees comp, but it is no where near the Odyssey.

I'm pretty sure Romeo didn't sit down and say, "Hmmm, which classical song should I steal today?" If anything, he's paying homage to the greats of classical music.

Uh, yeah, I haven't said anything that hasn't been said already. ;)

:D Thanks for today's laughs...

i don't think it is "sad' or "wrong"

but i can't understand why they would not give credit where it is due...it seems like the honorable thing to do

i have a strong sense of HOnor so that is what i would do if i was borrowing stuff from here and there..just so nobody could "catch me redhanded" or whatever

Its not about being "caught redhanded" its about the fact that the music is public domain...no one owns it. No one can sue for using or performing classical music, its free for the public to use as they wish. This is why SyX doesn't the stuff in their liners, they arent required to. And when I asked Romeo why he didnt list the stuff like Lacrimosa in the V liners he said "well, EVERYONES heard the Lacrimosa." So theres an answer. :p
