Romeo's New tone

and a bit off topic, but it kinds of irks me when people say a tone sounds digital. What? you can hear the 0's and 1's coming out?! end of rant...
No, you can't hear the 0's and 1's, but you can tell it sounds like a digital modelling amp instead of an actual tube amp. I'm not saying Romeo's tone is bad, just different from if he had been using Engls or Marshalls.

Honestly i CAN hear the difference when it comes to High Gain tones. They dont have the "openness" of a tube amp. Not to say digital amps sound bad cause they dont, but to my ears at least you can hear the difference.

I make no bones about certain people being able to get good tones for Solid state / Digital stuff. Hell the last nevermore album 90% of the solos were cut through a pod XT pro and theres some great lead tones on there.

As for solid state all ya gotta say is DIME and it kills the argument cold. That Mo'Fo had the best high gain solid state tone ever put to tape.

My preference is definitely tubes, and as digital amp modelers like the Vetta II get better and better its only a matter of time till they nail it.

Honestly, it all sounds like his tone on The Odyssey, just a bit less over-compressed.

I really have no clue which amps Romeo used on Paradise Lost... But he certainly sounds much better than he ever did. Actually, Romeo's tone on previous albums is one of the main reasons why I couldn't really get into Symphony X... as a guitar geek you sadly get hung up on these things. But let me be the first... well, maybe not the first... but let me say (now that's better) that Paradise Lost is one of the best discs to come out this year - it really rocks in a big way!

As for the technical side of things, I'm guessing that Romeo is relying mainly on a Powerball for recording, and that what caused this massive improvement has more to do with finding the right producer/engineer, than some major change in equipment.

Cheers

I think the complete contrary, i loved his tone before, it was pretty unique, but now it sounds like pretty much everything, bleh.

Got a sneak peek at some recent interview info.
It was apparantly a mix of Engel, some Line6, and even some Marshall. He did some re-amping on this one... I've never heard him mention doing that before...

His tone is definitely much better on this album. Though at Gods of Metal he played through a pair of vettas and his tone was nowhere near as good. But then again i wasnt in the best place for sound quality, i should maybe have taken a trip to the bit near the PA desk.

Doesn't Romeo use ENGL's in the studio nowadays? Im pretty sure he uses a Fireball and the two Vetta's live. When I saw him, I was talking about ENGL's with the guitarist for Echoes of Eternity and he said that Michael uses and ENGL in the studio.

ENGL's seem to be getting a lot of attention lately. I imagine they have a huge price tag. Echoes of Eternity...man...I had to sit through them twice this years.

Haha I wasn't a big fan of them, but they were cool people. The bassist was very good though.

I liked Sanctity when they played, Jared is the man hahaha

Back to ENGL's...yeah they get a TON of attention now. They're pretty good, but they take a toll on your wallet. I hope to get a Powerball but I am considering a Vetta perhaps.

Yeah....Sanctity were just good ole fun, in your face metal.

I see where Echoes of Eternity are going...it just never gels.

ENGLs aren't as much as I thought...on par with Marshalls. Anyone familiar with the Carvin V series or Legacy offerings? Madison is another company that looks interesting.

Friend of mine just bought a Carvin V series, he loves it. I have yet to try it out, but I'm looking forward to running an Ibanez & a Caparison through it. I miss my tube amps like you wouldn't believe!

I got to try a Legacy combo, and I was NOT impressed at all.
I used to use a Marshall (JCM800 from 1986-7), and then got hooked on Mesa Boogie (MK IV), and in my opinion, the Legacy couldn't touch either one, FWIW.... Everyone's ears are different, just try before you buy...
