SAD SONGS

to add another Evergrey song in there.. "I'm Sorry".

Pretty much any My Dying Bride can get you depressed if you're not in a decent mood when you're listening to it.

Song for a Dead Friend - Kevin Gilbert

Thats definitely the saddest song ever written.

Dissident - Esoteric draws a deep feeling of sadness and agony out of me.

I'm adding "As light as our darkness" by Evergrey to the list.

And Carpet Crawlers by Genesis.

svart djup, den sista runans dans, rok - Finntroll
the ravens, ring of gold, hammerheart - Bathory
eternal wait - Ensiferum
journey to the end, soge 1 and 2 - Windir

Katatonia have alot of sad songs. There are also a a few Pantera songs like Hollow and Cemetary Gates that solo does hit you quite hard.

Does anyone else find some Katatonia songs to be "sad" in a contrived way? I still like them, I just don't find them as genuinely emotional as I used to.

are we talking about "last fair deal gone down"

because if we are, certainly

if we're talking to anything prior to that album, you're fucking nuts

I think LFDGD is the album that gave me that impression. Some songs on TD also, and on VE the lyrics seem more and more to be trying to appeal to a certain demographic. probably all in my head, but it makes it a bit harder to enjoy these songs like i did when i was younger.

haven't heard the new one yet, what's the verdict?

they kinda left the whole sadness/depression thing with viva emptiness anyway; good move. i mean don't get me wrong, it's still not bright and happy (like some songs on lfdgd...) but they're focusing on other things that i dont feel like going into in detail here but anyway: i think the lyrics on viva emptiness are brilliant

not sure yet. give me a few months

i think its the tendency towards abstract descriptions of situations that may or may not have arisen from real life experience. there's a very fine for me beyond which that style of lyrics start to sound contrived. whether theres any justification to that claim i can't say, and its possible for me to still enjoy the lyrics and love the songs despite what could just be my penchant for dissecting music i've listened to for too long.

I have only heard Brave Murder Day and the song "Saw you Drown" and I'm not hearing any "tearjerking sadness" at all.

Its great music, I just don't understand the sad part.

BTW stealing Opeths vocalist = good idea.
