SAMPLES OF MY GRETSCH BLACK WIDOW KIT

how the heck do you get such a snappy kick sound? I forever struggle with getting a nice, clean, punchy kick naturally......

Sounds good!!

kick in is a D6
Kick out is an AT4033
plus a subkick

powerstroke 3 head tuned just tight enough to smooth the wrinkles. same with the front head. try to get it as loose as possible, finger tighten the lugs and then just give them half a turn.

I've got a towel slighly damping the beater head, but just barely
falam pad and plastic beater

the kick is 20" diameter and 22" deep it's a pretty badass little kick

Mic on batter head or no?

I just struggle a lot with kick sounds. Our drummer just got an Axis longboard pedal and the beaters are weird.....seems like a rubber type material but I haven't really checked em out yet.

In case you havent seen it, Glenn has an excellent breakdown here

I think it's safe to say getting good drum sounds is the hardest thing for everybody. Certainly my biggest weakness. My best advice, FWIW is to really dig in and learn how to tune drums. It will serve you very well forever and imho the single most effective thing you can do to improve your recordings

Yep, dove into that thread a while back, definitely GREAT stuff in there! I may have to revisit again soon.
