SATURDAY NIGHT HEADLINERS

 I wish! I wonder if AF might play an Ayreon cover. After all, Floor and Joost played for Arjen. That might be the closest we'll get to having Ayreon at PP, short of having SoP play (they do some Ayreon covers)!

As far as feasible bands go:
  • Evergrey - I know that there are a few, on the forum, that don't like them but, I'd think that most attendees, forum members or not, would stay on Sat night.
  • Symphony X - Ditto.
  • Iced Earth - I don't think that I've heard or read of anyone, that knows of them, not liking them. Correct me if I'm wrong.
  • Brainstorm - Andy seems to rule the PP crowd! I'd think that most would stay, even though there are some people who say they they're not headliner worthy.
  • Kamelot - There's plenty of KHAAAAAAAAAAN fans, not to mention fans of the whole band, to keep the crowd packed for that too!

That's why I put two smileys behind 'em. It'll probably never happen, but.....whew. Imagine if Arjen was given the last two slots on a Saturday....maybe two sets plus an intermission, or a break to rearrange the stage...... Yowza!
That gave me an idea. What if Glenn had Ayreon in place of 2 bands (slots 4 & 5 ) on a future PP Sat night? Would it be affordable then to give Arjen 2 bands worth of money for everything? There certainly is more than enough material for 2 sets. And if Glenn still wanted to keep the 10 band format for the mainfest or if that wasn't enough $$$, what about dedicating a future Showcase to Ayreon solely? If Arjen wants more money than 4 bands worth...I guess there would be know way. :erk:

Might work if they were given the 2nd and 3rd slots. They have a vocal following here, but they wouldn't draw enough for the fest in the 4 & 5 slots.

Full Savatage reunion would be awesome.
Brainstorm did kick ass.
Disappointed Nevermore had to drop, would love to try that again.
Helloween rules.
Would love Iced Earth. (Come back Barlow!)
Hmm. How about Iced Earth and Blind Guardian followed by Demons and Wizards? :-)
And then we still have the new Nightwish singer to be announced. Would love for their return in 2008.
And maybe off genre, but being Atlanta all, a Stuck Mojo reunion would be really cool.

I'm sort of mixed on Helloween and Iced Earth due to lineup changes, but I'd have to say I'd rather see them than not. :kickass:
Blind Guardian would own all hell.
Would love to see Brainstorm, but I'm not sure they're a headliner quite yet.
Kamelot and Symphony X would be welcome returns.
While Evergrey rock and everything, I think they need a little break from the festival, I mean, what could a performance in the immediate future offer than the last one didn't?
I have two ideas that haven't been mentioned here that I think would rock:

Stormwarrior + Kai Hansen: They've played numerous festival gigs with an all Walls of Jericho set that covers the old Helloween classics with Kai on vocals. This is really the only way to hear that material performed live, and from what I hear it kicks immense amounts of ass.

Andre Matos: Fresh out of Shaaman, with two other major bands, Angra and Viper, behind him, he's indicated with the one solo show he's done so far he intends to perform music from all his projects (as opposed to a certain Norwegian Coverdale impersonator) with emphasis on Angra and Shaaman, I would absolutely kill to see him live and it would be his North American debut, although I'm not sure how popular he is among the PP crowd.

After Brainstorms last 3rd slot performance, I would LOVE to see them tear down the roof as the headliner especially on a Saturday night!!

Getting to see AF play an Ayreon song or two at PP would be awesome, but if something like that is going to happen I'd rather see it from Stream of Passion, however, should AF surprise us I wouldn't complain.

I personally would not want to see Evergrey play the festival two years in a row. I think if they were headlining on Saturday this year, I would be less likely to stick around, mainly because I already saw them twice last year.
Iced Earth would be awesome ... but only if Barlow is singing. I don't really think I'd want to sese Iced Earth with Ripper again (I saw them twice with him and the last time I was highly dissapointed.), but if it was part of a festival lineup it wouldn't stop me from seeing other bands.
Brainstorm love to see them play the festival again, hopefully as a headliner, but anywhere on the bill would be fine with me.
As far as Kamelot goes, I'd love to see them again, but I'm already going to see them again this year on tour. Besides, they played PPV, Conception played PPVI (so most folks got their Kahn dossage there) and Kamelot just toured last year (post PP) with Epica and they are returning this summer with Leave's Eyes. It really wouldn't have been special if they played this year's festival.

I love seeing repeats at ProgPower, but Glenn does a pretty good job of trying to space them out year after year which is a really good move IMO. I will say that I've heard others suggest a PPX with all repeats and I think as an anniversary festival that's ok, but I wouldn't want to see 8-10 repeats every year.

Good point there. That is why I didn't understand why a Savatage reunion was pursued again. It was pretty much already done a few years ago and it looks like wasn't a big hit. I am glad it fell through this time and After Forever got chosen.

It's not that it wasn't a big hit. Hell that's what brought me to PP that year, and every year after.

I wouldn't mind a reunion... My point was, no matter HOW big a band is, there is always going to be a handful of people who don't like the band and won't stick around to see them past a song or two. I don't think there will ever be a band that has every single ticket holder watching their (entire) set.

Agreed!

I wasn't suggesting that they would play this year again, but for them to play a future PP in general. But I wouldn't complain, if they did. I've seen them 3 times and had a great time, each time! At the same time, I would wonder if there was another band that would have been worth that slot, that I haven't seen before.

Yeah it was great seeing Conception @ PPVI! I already missed Kamelot playing last year, because of PPVII (I'm definitely not the only one). Hopefully they'll come to South FL, but if not, I'll go to a Tampa/St. Petersburg show. You're right about that not being a "special" show.

Any way it could be worked, I'd be happy if Glenn pulled it off. And yeah, you're right about the following here, on the forum, as opposed to the US in general.

I totaly agree 100% Matos is god.:notworthy :notworthy

I don't see why he isn't just because the band is under his name now, Shaaman probably would have gone over pretty well as a headliner, but yeah, Matos in any slot would just be...:notworthy

Hmmm, this is arguable. I could see an Ayreon show holding down a looong headlining slot (or two) if there were any combination of the following things going on:
  • special set-length -- longer than prior Ayreon/SoP performances
  • special guest instrumentalists
  • especially, special guest vocalists: Getting allll of them would probably be an impossibility, but Bruce Dickinson? James Labrie? Devin Townsend? Mikael Akerfeldt? Fish? Pick two or three, add Floor J. and it'd be a once-in-a-lifetime show for a LOT of fans beyond the usual PP audience.
But, I think financially it's going to remain out of range. :erk:

Well we wouldn't have to have the 2 most expensive guest singers (James LaBrie & Bruce Dickinson...although that would be great). I think that it be more feasible to have some of the Star One ensemble mixed with the other Ayreon singers. Russell Allen, Damien Wilson, Floor & Irene Jansen along with Marcela Bovio, Mikael Åkerfeldt, and Devin Townshend. Besides, I love Damien Wilson's and Irene Jansen's versions of "Into the Black Hole" even better than Bruce Dickinson's!

But, that still sounds expensive as hell! I guess we'll either have to see if Glenn would ever do that special Ayreon concert, that I heard he would like to do someday, or Pellazapalooza or KevFest 2010:A Metal Odyssey could take that up! :kickass:
