I know this forum is supposed to be about Opeth but I thought many here might be Dream Theater fans as well. Well, anyway, I received SDOIT earlier today and I have been blasting it on my stereo for 7 hours non-stop. It's absolutely brilliant in my opinion. It has everything than one would expect from DT. Throw in the best aspects of every album they've made so far and you have SDOIT. Also the fact that they are heavier than ever before is wonderful.

I actually downloaded this album in its full several weeks ago but I've tried not to listen to it too much as not to spoil the "real" thing when it finally arrived! Worth every second of wait and every penny paid...

So what do you guys think of this album?

It was released here in Sweden today...

I don't know when it's coming out in the rest of the world though. It's says January 29 at their official website I just noticed. I guess that's for America... (?)

My faves off the album would be the somewhat harder tracks like The Glass Prison and The Test That Stumped Them All. Solitary Shell and Losing Time are superb as well. And the rest of the album of course rules as well!

I actually prefer Cher to Dream Theatre, and everyone knows how much I love Cher, hehe

Is it the entire band you dislike or just James LaBrie, be honest?

Other than the Glass Prison, I wasn't immediately impressed with what I've heard so far. Even the Glass Prison was something of a let down in some respects. One of the main reasons I like Dream Theater is the complexity of their songs (Erotomania, Overture 1928) and from what I've heard, the new album is pretty simplified, by Dream Theater standards anyway. Also, I was really hoping for ACOS part 2 regarding the title track, and it also seems sub-par, especially when compared to the godly ACOS.

Eh... maybe once I actually get the album it'll all come together in a magically delicious package :)

Yes, here in the USA we have to wait until the 29th :bah: At least I have a few mp3's to hold me over until then.

I was a bit worried at first as well. I loved The Glass Prison immediately though and I think it's one of their best ever. But the other songs sounded a bit boring at the first few listens (mp3's). With the complete thing in my hand all doubts are gone. I think it's absolutely stunning.

I wouldn't say that. I'd say it's every bit as complex as any of their previous works...Great guitar stuff by Petrucci and Jordan rules on the keyz...Portnoy delivers some heavy-duty drumslammin' and Myung - well he delivers as always...

Get the album man, I promise you won't regret it!

Man you damn dirty ass!! hehe it's not released here in Canada yet and i for some reason i can't explain don't want to download the MP3's.. i dunno i don't want to spoil it or something, not too sure myself even :) But i HAVE heard TGP and i loved it too! You know what's fucking bullshit though is that a lot of DT fans (who all think they are so open minded because they listen to prog) are shitting themselves and saying DT sold out because of that like 5 seconds of palm scratching on the strings in TGP at about 6 minutes. They're like "DT HAS GONE TECHNO AND ELECTRIC! THEY'VE SOLD OUT!!" i mean give me a fucking break! it is for like 5 seconds and it isn't a DJ anyways! it's JP rubbing his palm on the strings! man sometimes DT fans piss me off... they think they are so open minded and enlightened about music but they won't listen to a type of music because it has fucking death growls, or because the singer raps, or because the guitarist uses a 7 string and plays heavy groove stuff (Nu Metal) it is fucking sad. I am a HUGE DT fan, but i would NEVER rule out a kind of music because of one or even 2 silly aspects of the music (i mean you grow to like death growls anyway over time) Same goes for some people here who rule out a kind of music because "oh he is soloing too fast! SHOWOFF!!! THERE IS NO WAY THAT SHOWOFF CAN WRITE A GOOD SONG!!" that is shit too, and i know some of you do it here.

It is a brilliant piece of work, and yet another chapter in Dream Theater's evolution, one of the few bands that has changed its focus with every album while maintaining a signature sound. Disc 2 is amazing, each of the eight sections stands out on its own (the warmly melodic About To Crash, the savage The Test..., the beautiful Goodnight Kiss, the thoughtful prog of Solitary Shell, etc.)but when listened to as a whole it is truly a wonder to behold. And the album is their heaviest yet, The Glass Prison is only one of several moments that will forever prove wrong a. anyone who thinks DT isn't metal or b. James can't convincingly express aggression.
