ok well i was sitting in my car thinking about how ridiculous it is that ever since GR was released there's been a ton of people flipping shit at opeth for selling out....i have yet to hear a legitament reason as to why people think they've sold out unless you consider them signing to Road Runner or seeing someone younger than you wearing an Opeth shirt selling out....ok for one the fact that you doubt that Opeth is incapable of even making shitty music of any kind is laughable....your definetion of selling out seems to be more of a fashion statement than anything else.....suddenly theres a possibility that once a day somebody might recognize that demonic looking band logo on your shirt and at that same moment you'll hate the band....and besides, i dont know about anybody else but i try to show as many of my friends and people im around how amazing Opeths music is....im not worried about how many other people know about them its not going to change the music they make....if you want the definition of selling out listen to metallica or new mudvayne...i think that as long as Opeth continue to write songs 8min+ it would be impossible for them to become mainstream or whatever you're scared of them becoming...you gotta atleast give them credit for not having one of their cd's sound the same with the exception of Orchid and Morningrise as far as the style though they're still quite different from eachother....if they kept making the same cd over and over they would be just like any other boring band....thats really the essence of Opeth, they're completely unpredictable, you don't know if you're about to get booming death growls or floating on clouds after eating enough blotter acid to make Dr. Gonzo proud psychadelic guitar effects and whatnot.....their ability to change the mood and feeling throughout a song while making it work perfectly is their signature trademark and i dont think GR strays from that....granted prefering their older stuff to their new stuff is a totally different ballpark than accusing them of sellingout...i actually like their old stuff better but still love their newer stuff because its something totally different than anything else they've done....well this has turned into a pretty pointless thread but i just had to go off for a while and im mostly talking about people in other forums and just in general from people ive talked to so im done -H.S.

The forum has had many discussions about this, it is an opinon for a start, and secondly if people have confidence to say their opinon in the first place, what ever anyone else says is not going to change their opinon. If we are being honest these are the sort of disscussions that create alot of conflict within the forum.

Your point aboot not making two albums the same is a great one. Slayer and AC/DC havent really ever sold out, but make the same album over and over again. True some see God Hates Us All as selling out, but its far better to do an Opeth and never rest on your laurels and keep recreating your sound whilst retaining the main essence. Opeth couldn't 'sell out' however hard they tried so I do think, this one excluded, the thousands of threads dedicated to the topic seem pretty pointless...

But then I've now posted in one, so shit, my bad

You want to see the definition of sell out?

His own words:

"Whatever can have Kiss on it has to have Kiss on it."

This guy is the definition of sell out lol.

I will rephrase differently thier new cd to me isn't as good. Seems like they are just playing songs with the same old formula. It to me is just getting stale. Now I know that people will get pissed at me for stating my opinion but that is how I feel about the current sate of the band. This happens to most every groupl, hell most go south after the second or third album, I have thought Opeth was awesome at least up to BWP, then they did the light/heavy which is a good way to show what your capable of. But you can't keep making music that will blow everyone away. Sure, they lost some fans with each new album, but you know what. I have the feeling that they are picking up more and more fans with each new release. I am a fan of thier older stuff and probably always will be. The new one just did not do anything for me (that's that). That is reality for any band.

You know what's been missing with the last 5 opeth albums? Those beautiful guitar harmonies. Just listening to Orchid and Morningrise, it becomes all too apparent that the harmonies are what's missing...

mudvayne didnt sell out, they just flat out make bad music now.

Just out of curiosity... if you think Mudvayne makes bad music NOW... just when did they make GOOD music?

Opeth never sold out. I think one of the reasons they think they did, is the incorporation of Per as a full time member. I'll admit that the first time I heard GR, I hated it and I know why. I was half expecting a move back to MAYH, which wasn't going to happen and didn't happen. Also, it's odd hearing the keys take a major role in Opeth's music. It's something that we've never heard before, except for tastes of it on Damnation. However, the music is still there, the music still kicks ass, I still don't like Per joining the band, but Opeth is still one of my favorite bands and Ghost Reveries is one of my favorite albums.

Now, for those of you who still think Opeth sold out:
1. The music was written and the recording process began before Opeth signed to Century Media.
2. Damnation was more of a sellout album than Ghost Reveries. Mike even admitted that when Damnation was released, he wanted more people to come to Opeth.
3. STFU. You obviously know nothing about anything and therefore have no right to speak. :)
