As part of a series of articles about sci-fi or fantasy based concept albums, I'll soon be writing one about SSOASS

I know 'Arry got the idea for the album after reading the book by Orson Scott Card, but I need some more info about the cultural and mythological origins of the character and his powers. Where did he come from, and is Maiden's version of the story accurate?

All help will be received gratefully and acknowledged in the final piece. I'll even post it here if you like :).

I dont know anything about it, but make sure you post it here when its done, id like to read it :D

I didn't think there was a specific Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. All 7th sons were special, and all 7th sons of 7th sons were extra special.

I was under the impression that the whole thing came about cause 7 was a lucky number, and sons were pretty good thing to have in about that time. So while a 7th son was lucky, his 7th son was meant to have supernatural powers. The gift of second sight and all that.

I'd not base your inquries on finding THE SSOASS, rather look at the significance of the number 7 in mythology and in there somewhere you'll find reference to A SSOASS.

Terry Pratchett's book "Sourcery" (I think it's that one) is about a seventh son of a seventh son of a seventh son. Haven't read it yet though. :)

The Seventh Son's importance stems from the sacrality of the Number 7, one that ultimately roots in the seven islands of atlantis; and the seven eras of humanity. Interesting to note, that in india, the theme is more linked with the third son. A sort of ugly duckling, that grows to be a swan itself. Brahma, the Parama-Hamsa.

This Legend although mentioned in specific detail through many books of the old and new testaments of the King James version of the Bible, predates it, back to the dawn of time in all major philosophies and cultures of the world.

Today is born the Seventh One, born of a woman, the 'Seventh Son' and he in turn of a 'Seventh Son'....He has the power to heal, he has the gift of 'Second Sight' so it shall be written, so it shall be done....

Here the birth from an unbroken line, born the healer, the 'Seventh' his time. Unknowingly blessed as his life unfolds, slowly unveiling the power he holds.

Then they watch the progress he takes, the 'GOOD' and the 'EVIL' which path will he take.....Both of them trying to manipulate, the use of his powers before it's too late.....

The 'Seventh Son' is born the divine and chosen one, to become a Maker of Things' who has a 'special purpose in life' for the 'Lord of Hosts' to expose the EVIL and CORRUPTION of the World, but of who is CURSED by those SAME FORCES who would try to DESTROY him.....for he is the Trinity, the father, son & the holy spirit.....

Donald DeWayne Woods, is the Smokey Mountain Seventh Son of a Seventh Son a natural born rebel, who's just a BORN AGAIN type of Guy....who traded a life of Organized Crime for Walkin on Water, with the Lord's Angel, Helen Steiner Rice, poet laurete in his Corner.....and you can WRITE IT IN STONE...or look his achievements and biography up in Marquis Who's Who in America....

Forward from Leslie Shepard's Encyclopedia of the Occult
Belief in the special gifts of a Seventh Son or Daughter can be found in Folklore throughout the world. Leslie Shepard in his 'Encyclopedia of Occultism and parapsychology' states that in Romania the Seventh Child is fated to become a vampire. And that in England in the seventheenth century there were reports of a Seventh Son healing the deaf blind and lame.
In France, The Seventh Son was called a 'Marcou' and branded with a 'fleur-de-lis' {reknown worldwide as a symbol of the Divine & Quality, and all that is Holy, Click this Link for history}. Good Luck was also said to attend the Seventh Child. In olden days, when Captains of Merchant Ships were setting sail on long voyages, they would try, 'often by force if neccessary' to have a Seventh Son on ship as Legend has it that the Ship wouldn't sink with a Seventh Son on Board
The reason why the Seventh Child as opposed to the first or the fifth for example-should have 'Special Powers' has it's roots in ancient beliefs. The number Seven has many mystical and religious associations. Apart from the Bible telling of God creating the world in Seven Days, The number features throughout the old and new testaments.
Seven is a very significant number in numerology and is the basic unit of transition in natural cycles from the week as a phase of the lunar cycle to the idea that many of life's patterns are divided in phases of Seven. Healing and religion are, or course, deeply linked. Jesus Christ healed the sick and the lame and many saints were healers. Jesus said that others could heal in his name and through his power.
And the hope and faith of healing through prayer is a growing force in Christian religions. There are those who believe that Seventh Son's who don't consider any God to be part of their healing or being able to predict the future from the past would acknowledge that they are a channel for a power rather than being themselves the source......

I'm sitting back reading this thread waiting for Phloggy to have his say - I love this stuff, i.e. discussion on theme's etc. He always has the low down on song meanings etc (I REALLY enjoy this stuff - gettin off a bit on this thread.. err sort of - haha!)

If you have an hour or two talk to Phloggy about The Chemical Wedding (sorry to go off topic) - now there is a complex theme with deep songs !

On SSOASS - My spin is the album is a journey for the ill-fated *special 7th son*, tie in mystic powers with the power of fate plus evil minded politics and well there's a pandora's box ! Great choice for a thesis !

I better shut up now.. ! :)

Oops- missed Phloggy's thread - major DOH ! I must admit I expected more precise info from him.. tsk..tsk.. lol.

Umm - I am *sure* I read somewhere they DID base the album on a book or movie or something (cant remember now).

Have you looked in the Maiden FAQ thingy ? It has like HEAPS of info :

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/music/iron-maiden-faq/

there are a few others around on the web too.

Good Luck.

I remember that thread where we talked about The Chemical Wedding, it was so deep I thought I was going to drown :) Perhaps we should have one every week, but with a different album as the topic :D

I'm terrified that Maiden's next album is going to be called "Eddie's Dozen". Cos a baker's dozen is 13... yeah. I'm serious, too, because Maiden's the sort of band that would think of that!

I think its biblical, wasnt Cain cursed that way "Your seven sons and their seven sons" or something?

Thanks everyone

Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable says that seven, being the sum of two lucky numbers (four and three) is a sacred number, but that's all I could find.

With this info at my disposal, you've just made my job a helluva lot easier. Kudos to all :).
