Should I start a record label?

Which?

i would like to do something similar but with band promotions ... setting up mini US tours ... especially for bands coming from overseas.

What sort of genres would you be looking for? I'm not trying to turn this into like a bandwhore thread, but I am definitely looking for someone reliable to work with in the future. I know you're not trying to like start with new bands and everything, but if you're interested along the road, we should talk...

Genres that I know well and like. Obviously I would avoid -core, industrial, electronica, noise, etc simply because it wouldn't make sense. If I'm passionate about the release then it helps motivate. Btw, I've yet to hear Noltem. I'll keep you posted, don't worry. :)

Do it, if it becomes successful, just think of the leverage you might gain in bringing some of the cult forum bands to play here...

Baby steps. Sponsoring the Hammers at the next ProgPower is something I'd consider (I've already talked to MetalAges about this, cannot for the life of me get a hold of Mr Cobbet) but only if I can release something with them. They have some leftover material that I think would be sweet on a 7" or MCD. Most fans of HoM would go for it, I'm 100% sure. But I'm getting ahead of myself, heh....just sharing ideas with you guys.

release the Agalloch demo on CD, and I promise I'll buy all Slough Feg albums. Well, at least one.

Re-release the Arckanum trilogy and I'll be sure to lick clean whatever part of your body you deem worthy of my tongue! :p
Well seriously, I presume you already spoke to Emi, the boss of Code666. I think he's a really good example of how to get a label running from nothing, and make it one of the most kickass labels around still earning virtually nothing out of it. I'm sure he could teach you a lesson on how to get broke and cult at the same time!

LOL :tickled:

Haha...yeah, my condolences to all that do this on a full-time basis. Bunch of troopers the lot of them (but presumably single with no kids - unlike yours truly), heh.

The whole code666 staff holds down full time jobs besides running the label.
Emi has a newborn if I am not mistaken.

This is the kind of thing that keeps the faith in metal strong! A lot of respect is also owed to any spouse or partner who understands and supports the hard work that a guy like Emi or anyone else who does this puts into working 40+ hours a week and running a record label in his spare time!

Oh yeah.. tapes are going out soon (this applies to everyone). Sorry for the delays and stuff, my mom has been really sick and I've been busy in general! I assure you all, there are indeed 12 packages sitting on top of my amp that are going out ASAP.

In the meantime... how about those mp3s! :)

I like Noltem! Send stuff to me so I can review it. :tickled:

I guess I should add my comments on the label too. I think it's a great idea and in fact, it is something I plan on doing as I get older and have the finances available to do so. It's something that would probably kill me because I would have a distro and be obsessed with sending out packages and having low prices, but it would all be worth it in the end. I hope to be able to save a lot of money over the next ten years and make this a reality at some point.

It should be done sometime later this week. I have a couple large projects in the works and a couple other reviews I'm working on. This is really good stuff you've put together though. Noltem=win. In fact, there's my review. :loco:

It's good to hear this! Thanks a lot- I'm looking forward to the actual review. Don't feel like it has to be elaborate and stuff... I don't think you're planning to write an essay on an 18-minute demo anyway :)
