That should not be a requirement at all... English is not an easy language to learn... you take for granted how difficult a language is to learn because you speak it yourself... Anyways you should not force anyone to learn a language if they do not want to... much like you should not be forced to learn French or whatever language in High School to get your High School diploma.. though it would be beneficial for you to me multi-lingual... but it should be an individual choice... If they do not learn English then they are only hurting themselves and not the rest of us...
And if they are forced to learn english then I say you and everyone else should be forced to be fluent in another language by the time you graduate High School... And i don't mean a language you already know because of your parents/family... this way it is fair for immigrants and citizens alike... and perhaps you will have empathy to see what it is like...

Again I agree with you. English has more irregularities than other languages. I think a lot of Mexicans do need to know English though. Imo people need to learn English if they are to be in English speaking parts of the united states (which is pretty much the whole country). I can understand how someone would be pissed off that where they live now speaks Spanish. But I don't any problem with this country being multilingual, they do it in Europe. And I don't have any problem with there being places in the united states where people speak languages besides English, as long as they are separate from English speaking areas.

I think English is extremely easy to learn,but that maybe because of being force fed American and English tv literally since birth,like most western countries,might be harder if you´re from Micronesia.

Europe isn´t multilingual per say since it´s not a country,a few of the countries are but the majority demand you know the national language.

Languages are much easier to learn when you're younger. And from what I have heard people in Europe learn languages much earlier in school when they learn languages better. Its not very easy for a 20 year old or older to learn a new language.

That is because they are more cultured then we are and are enthusiastic to be able to communicate with the world in other ways then money or guns... I admire European countries that speak multiple languages... all we do is bitch about others not knowing english and want to force them to learn it but you don't see that in Europe and they are more peaceful to each other except the French of course lol

True but mostly I think it's not easier for older people because of time.. we all have jobs and responsibilities while children do not and have all the time and attention to languages to learn them...

Even if they are in the same cities and towns, who cares. They are not bothering you and mainly speak among themselves. But yes they should learn english but it should be a choice and not forced. And anyways it is usually the first generation immigrants who do not learn english. Their children and such do learn it and down the line in further generations. People seem to forget that. People who do not learn english are only hurting themselves and no one else.

And no this will not tear the country apart. That is just a myth that is spoon fed to you by bigots and politicans and you are falling right into it. And how will it destroy or invade "our culture"? Most of what you call American culture has been borrowed or stolen from other languages and cultures and passed off as "American culture". That is the irony of this.

It will not tear this country apart because it hasn't done so to European countries who have multi cultures and languages throughout their history. Understand now?

We should do what we always have done throughout our history. Integrate other cultures into our "own culture". It would just make our country better, more interesting and more "cultured".

Might as well post a clip of David Duke lol You should look into Buchanan's background, ideology etc. before posting his clips. On another note you should listen to what Bill Maher has to say on the issue though. He makes alot of good points.

Name a European country which alot of poverty and is not considered "wealthy" compared to poverty stricken countries. But anyways another reason for immigration is not always poverty. Consider political refugees for one example.

I wouldn't have a problem with Spanish because I am half Colombian and would be able to find my way around. But the problem with one part of a city or town speaking another language is that there will be communicational issues.

I think if adult immigrants who have problems learning a new language don't want to learn the language they could just live somewhere in this country with people who speak their own language (aka ethnic communities). They could create new communities for people of their own culture instead of "invading". But I think the children must learn English in school.

You think France, Germany etc. do not have their own immigration problems? Just because its' not reported in U.S. media does not mean they do not have problems in Europe themselves. Now answer my question of earlier.

Most do not communicate with each other to begin with unless they absolutely have to. They keep to themselves.

No offense but I do not know where you have been? But that already exists. "ethnic communities" i mean. And most if not all 2nd generation immigrant children do learn english. I'm an example of that. My parents are Costa Rican (dual citizenship since now they are american citizens as well) and came here around 1970. Did it all legal but the kicker is they never learned english though my father tried all these years. He knows enough to communicate but not fluent by any definition of the word. We lived in "white" non-ethnic neighborhoods all of our lives and they survived with jobs (my father owned a barbershop), paid their taxes etc.. the whole 9 yards. He is well known and liked in his neighborhood. Just wanted to give an example of why ethnic or segregated communities is not necessary and to show you that an immigrant who does not speak much or any english did well nonetheless and so can others.

This whole "invasion" and tearing us apart talk is nothing but bigotry. The same bigotry that immigrants in the late 1800's and early 20th century experienced. The italians, irish, poles, jews etc. and guess what? Our country was not destroyed by these immigrants being here. In fact it only made our country more powerful in the world. WASP's founded this nation but alot of immigrants built it from the sweat & blood of their backs during the Industrial age and beyond.

Apparently? I just did. I'm not going to write a whole book on it for you when you can look it up yourself but someone just mentioned Pakistani immigrants being hated upon in Europe.Which is one example that I meant. Just because you are ignorant about the world do not think I am.
