Living in the US I have never heard of such a thing. 2% more and that would be two beers in one.
5.9% gets me excited.
That's not a big difference from regular 5.0 but I think with around 3 beers you can start to tell the diffence.

plus more than half the boutique belgian beers like rochefort 10 (11.3%) sit above 8% alc vol.
why it matters, i have nfi.
although the idea that a standard beer in the US (i.e. a draught or larger) is less than 4.5% is laughable if it is correct.

Sounds about right. There was a beer in the pub the other night that was 9%, and they only sold it by the hald pint! HAHA
