Sorr if this is in the wrong area of the forums. Here's the deal with me. I'm a newbie singer who can growl a little and now my freind wants me as lead vocals for a band we want to form. This is all good, but i've never sung before, and I don't have the money or time for lessons. The only singing i've ever done is along with slipknot and some of my other favorite bands like Lamb of God. I don't have a very deep voice, and i've been seeing a lot about using your stomach to push air into your throat for the growl, and it made it a lot deeper. Also, for most of the time that I am home, I cannot listen to audio tutorials. Anybody have a any decent tutorials for me to start out with? I'm not too worried about my growl, and i'm not sure baout my scream. Is there even a technique to screaming? I know that when I scream, I want to sound like Slipknot, but it isn't likely, I just want to learn how to do this stuff right and not sound like an idiot. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

1. Open your mouth as wide as you possibly can. This is THE biggest problem for most young vocalists.

2. Get a feel for how much breath you are using, and how much you need to use. A more constricted windpipe can actually lead to stronger screams. Screaming volume doesn't come from the same place as speaking or shouting volume.

3. Once you get a mid-level scream down, practice holding it as long as possible and taking it up as high as you can, while also trying to maintain volume and force. You won't be able to at first. That's the point of practice.

4. Stop listening to Slipknot.

Legendary screamers (in my mind)...

Josh Scogin, currently of The Chariot. Like no other. Truly hateful.

Jesse Leach, original voice of Killswitch Engage, who if you don't like already I'm sure you would. He destroyed his throat with his singing style, so don't try to take it to that level. But almost.

Dimitri Minikakis, original voice of the Dillinger Escape Plan.

Ihsahn of Emperor, unparalleled stamina.

ICS Vortex when he was in Borknagar, some of the best control and emoting I've ever heard from a screamer.

Varg Vikernes on mid-years Burzum. Just sick. Sick and ugly and sick.

Also Tomas Lindberg on the first couple At The Gates albums. Same as above, but 2x the phlegm.

You can look at my thread 'The Guide To All Ranges Of Screaming'.

My immediate advice would be to first do the excersises I posted (the throat scream gets very deep (like slipknot I think)). Stay in you're range, where it feels right. Don't push very hard. Breathe from the diaphram always.

Well I will always listen to Slipknot, noone will ever deter me from that, but i'm not set on sounding like them, I just want to learn to be good enough to sing in a band. I'll check out that tutorials aswell.

So a few more things. My problem is, I don't know what you mean by not screaming with your throat. Is this when you use your throat and you get a tickling feeling at first and then it hurts? Also, is this what I should use for the death growl? I can do two things for a death growl. I can use my regular "cords" I guess, and I can use my throat (the tickling to hurt thing.) Also, i've been reading A LOT about diaphragmatic breathing, but I don't know how to discern whether I am doing it or not. How will I know to use it when I am screaming? You guys should aslo keep in mind that I have NEVER had any vocal training before, I am as n00bletistic as it gets.

I thought of a way to clarify it. When I do this, it almost seems like I am closing my throat and forcing air and pleghm through it, as opposed to regular talking and screaming, wehre it feels like I am just letting air through and open passage.

Drink honey or syrup or Mountain Dew or anything with alot of sugar in it. It'll help to relieve tension in your throat.

Waitasec! This isn't the porn forum!

OK so I have to ask, why do you guys hate Slipknot with such zealous?

Because I can probably name several hundred bands who I don't even like, but who I still consider to be better than Slipknot. Their "extreme" tendencies are hardly genuine. They're simply dumbing-down proper extreme metal, then soaking it with toughguy lyrics and assorted forms of gimmickry. A band with two full-time percussionists on top of the drummer, and they almost never break out of straight four-on-the-floor beats, much less do they attempt complex rhythmics. Etc., etc.

My problem with Slipknot is that if you strip away all the shenanigans they use, they're just a below average thrash/hardcore band with better than average nu-metal tendencies and far too much profanity to be taken seriously as artists. And I like profanity. They're nothing to base your whole musical experience on.

OK so could somebody please clarify this whole don't sing with your throat. How do I sing without my throat? Was I right before with what I said?

HAHA! Your grammar sucks!
It's you're, not your. Your is generally posessive while you're is a contraction of you are. Apparently you're in need of the gramer classes, not me. That, I believe, is worthy of self proclaimation to ownage.
