Slate Digital FG-X Mastering Processor

Or... you can disable "inform plugins of offline rendering state" and render 1xOnline... works for me

uhhh... I got some really bad crackling and popping noises when doing it this way. what's up with that? it didn't happen when I was doing it the other way...

I'm not sure if I'm buying this yet or not... $300 is a bit much. So far, I don't think it blows away my current setup (gclip on drums bus + waves ssl comp & Ozone 4's Intelligent II mode on master bus)... There's differences, but they're subtle... If the price was less, I'd be more interested...

I get some audio dropouts while rendering, but the rendered file is free of artifacts. Checked a bit and acctualy you don't have to change the "inform plugins of offline state". But rendering using the "online" settings definitly works with FG-X

what causes those dropouts?

is this really any better than using waves L3/ozone/elephant and a good ssl style master bus comp? I really dont need any more maxmizers, but i cant resist a good GAS urge

I'm not so sure. I was excited at first, but the more I test it, the less impressed I am. When you really push FG-X, it still starts to get squashed and the snare starts disappearing. I just rendered two masters at the same volume, one with fg-x and one with Ozone 4's Intelligent II mode... Pushed to average around -8dB RMS just to see how they'd compare, and they sound almost identical. The snare starts disappearing on both of them at this volume... Both sound much better and don't lose the snare when they're around -10dB RMS.

Sure, I think it's much better than L2 and other not so great limiters, but I'm not hearing much of a difference between this and a really good limiter like Ozone 4's Intelligent modes...

Yeah, there are artifacts on the tom's in the beginning, a consequence of using rbass on them, if you didn't have ADD and got past the first 20 sec. it would improve...

I listened to the entire mix; I was pointing out that all three mixes clipped because of the people who were saying FG-X was causing it. I wasn't trying to bash your mix or anything.

I really have to stay away from this thread. I literally just bought Ozone a few days ago and it's being delivered to my house today. I don't think I can return it for a refund either (MF says software is returnable for credit only!!)

Someone please tell me that FG-X doesn't completely replace Ozone, so I can feel better about my bad timing...

Please?

I hate you Mr. Slate...

Bobby

Read my last post. For me, Ozone 4's Intelligent II mode compares extremely well with FG-X. I just compared them side by side, and honestly, there really isn't much of a difference. I don't usually use anything in Ozone other than the Loudness Maximizer, but at $200 vs. $300 for FG-X... Ozone does more and costs less, so I'm going to have to say it's the better deal....

FG-X's comp is cool for a subtle, transparent comp, but if you're like me and mix into Waves SSL comp, then I don't think it'd get much use.

I don't think I'm going to be buying FG-X... probably just sticking with Ozone...

Naaah, the thing it was a problem with the mix, becouse the toms are too loud in the intro, but after that the mix is ok and there's no clipping, so no fault of FG-X, just mine.

Well in my case it's duende/uad quirks, when I have ligher mixes without too many dsp card plugins I have no issues whatsoever during online mixdown.

I'm not sure if I'm buying this yet or not... $300 is a bit much.

Yup, the price point is placed a bit too high, i'd like to have FG-X for the convinience, and I really dig the metering system, anywho.. will be waiting for a promo nontheless.

Yeah, the meters are really nice! I like the meters a lot. Actually, the whole GUI is very nice.

It's definitely not a bad plugin by any means, but as far as sound quality/getting loudness, I don't think it beats Ozone 4. If they were the same price and I didn't already have Ozone 4, then I'd seriously consider it, but as of now, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to buy FG-X.

FYI guys...

Official word on the Slate site is that the demo disables render mode. Perhaps those who have successfully rendered it are bussing out or something. I haven't attempted to render anything with it, just having fun playing with it and I will likely be buying this plugin as soon as my trial is nearing expiration. My only gripe is that I wish I had this plugin 3 years ago!! I'm honestly tempted to remix and remaster everything with it, it's that substantial.

My advice to everyone is to read the manual, it's really good and not only tells you how to use it, it gives the philosophy behind the plugin, some words about the loudness wars and how we should be mastering more dynamically from now on, etc. It's a great read!

The most amazing thing about the plugin to me is that it makes everything sound more "interesting" and less "I did this in my bedroom." It's got that expensive outboard gear vibe without being overbearing or harsh - if anything it smooths out any harshness in the top end, likely due to internal oversampling and great algorithmic design all around. This plugin is the cure for the negative aspects of digital mixing.

I think maybe you are buying into the hype a bit too much and letting the pretty GUI affect your opinion?

I read the manual. and it's a good read. However, plenty of people here can get to -10dB RMS already without a major lack of punch or dynamics or losing the snare...

I don't think you need to buy FG-X just to decide you want to master more dynamically from now on... haha

Definitely not buying into the hype or the GUI. I'm a skeptic and a developer myself. I can also get -10db RMS without problems - however the main thing I get from the FG-X is that plus serious vibe and width.

I've been mastering very dynamically for the past 2 years, FYI. My point about the manual was that it's good for understanding the design philosophy behind the plugin, and how it's designed for people who think like most of us here do.
