Which band is better, and WHY?

Also, which band do you think has been more influential? (just write this second part in a post, but vote about who's better above)

Slayer pushed the boundaries and influenced DM quite a bit. Metallica played more traditional stuff and were certainly less innovative.

The best stuff on Slayer's first three albums (Black Magic, Hell Awaits, Raining Blood, etc) slays anything Metallica ever did.

I concur.

Slayer has influenced more metal bands. But metallica in my opinion is better and Kirk Hammet plays more complex melodies, Kerry King is more about brutality and speed. Only complex stuff by slayer is their solos to tell you the truth.

Slayer are easily the more intense band, but a lot of thier songs sound the same to me, They don't intrest be bar a few songs. I've listened to them, I think they are a good band, but not something I would listen too a lot. Metallica keep me intrested, I'm a big a fan of the Load and Reload period as much as I am of the old stuff. Metallica's music keeps me much more intrested.

For influence, underground metal was probably more influenced by Slayer, but for the mainstream side of music I'd give it to Metallica, What band now days doesn't know how to play master of puppets?.

Slayer by far have stuck to their guns and stayed true to what they started way back when. I think they both have influenced their own share of bands - Metallica's influence reaching a more mainstream group of bands in my opinion.

I can't fairly say which band is better, because they are very different bands...I will say that they played extremely important roles in the metal scene and definitely left their mark...

:err:

Slayer went mediocre after Reign in Blood, and shit after South of Heaven. Now they're barely better than Slipknot.
