Slayer

Oh and as far as the Sabbath vs Slayer thing, Tony Iommi could play the guitar better with half a hand than Kerry King could if he had 4 arms. And Sabbath has released more albums that are widely considered good (8 at the very least) than pretty much Slayer's entire discography (especially considering most people agree that atleast half of it is worthless).

Kerry King

I bet you were excited when he took time out of his busy schedule of recording shitty music and making goth jewelry to star in Sum 41's video on MTV. Metal. \m/

First off I've never dissed Sabbath here... infact Sabbath is in the top 5 or 6 metal bands ever. Secondly why do you mention Kerry King? Why not Hanneman? Hanneman is at least the better song writer than King. Half of their discography is not worthless, they've made 3 bad albums. And I doubt that Iommi is THAT much better at guitar than Hanneman and King. And I couldn't give a shit about Sum 41. Furthermore King clarified that he couldn't give a shit about Sum 41 but only did it for the record company. And even if he did like Sum 41 and was jazzed to be in the video so what? It doesn't erase the great albums he made from 83-91.
Lastly you are still an idiot.

I agree. Hanneman wrote Angel of Death, Raining Blood, Dead Skin Mask and many of the other classics. I think people think that King is a better guitarists because he is more vocal and has a more distinctive image.

People who think King is a better guitarist (than pretty much anyone) are insane. And the only distinctive image that he has is that of a fat bald redneck with chubby fingers and the guitar playing skills you'd assume to go with someone like that.

It's not so much that he "uses dissonance" as it is that he just has no clue what scales are. When he goes into a solo he pretty much just moves his chubby fingers up and down the fretboard as fast as he can and calls it a solo.

As I've said, merely opinion. While Iommi's guitar playing skills are better than both Hanneman and King (and I'm sure they'd agree), I've yet to be able to sit through an entire Ozzy-era Black Sabbath album without changing the song. Their best album (Heaven and Hell) was over 25 years ago. Everything from Black Sabbath post-Ian Gillan has been subpar and the reunion with Ozzy has merely shown them to be cashing in on their past as a nostalgia act like Kiss.

Yeah but the first 6 albums + Mob Rules and Heaven and Hell is still 8 classic metal albums. And personally I think Never Say Die and Technical Ecstasy are pretty fun too (though they certainly have their cringe-worthy moments).

And hey, in the end I am not arguing who is a better band. I'm fine with people liking Slayer. I just get annoyed when retards like Thoth-Amon, who I can only guess is probably 16-years-old and has just stopped listening to Slipknot a year ago, act as if you can't like metal if you do not utterly worship Slayer. As I said, I don't see what's there to worship. They are nothing special musically and none of the band members are worship-worthy for other reasons either (especially King who is just a complete jackass redneck). And while they were influential they were not critical to the existance of metal beyond the mid-eighties. If Slayer hadn't existed some other band would have done what they did and probably done a better job at it too. Slayer are not the best metal band, and not even the best thrash band. Ofcourse if you sit on your knees and let Kerry King blow his load all over your face every night you might be too blind to actually see there is life beyond Slayer.

You are SO off here it is ridiculous. First off I'm 27 and have been listening to metal for 12 or so years. I've NEVER listened to Slipknot or any other mallcore band. Secondly I didn't say that Slayer was the best band, merely that their classic material ranks amongst metals best material. And you are an ignorant and naive douche to continue to ignore it.

Replace 'the best' with 'one of the best then' if you insist on arguing semantics. You also said not liking Slayer means 'you obviously don't like metal' which is about the most retarded thing you could say and which you have continued to ignore after I called you on it repeatedly.

It's called hyperbole but in fact seeing as you think some of metals best albums are jokes, then your taste in the genre is HIGHLY suspect. It's OK if they aren't your favorite (heck I wouldn't say they are mine) but to write off great albums like Hell Awaits or Reign in Blood as jokes shows a serious lack of taste in the genre.

's called an opinion. I like plenty of other classics (Sabbath, Maiden, Priest). Slayer is not one of them. The idea that a certain band is 'mandatory' or otherwise you can't like the whole genre is just childish beyond belief (hence me assuming you were 16). Slayer's sound is hardly representative of the metal sound in general (thank god) so why on earth is it not possible to dislike them and like other metal bands instead? And I wouldn't be so harsh on them if I didn't have to read retarded comments like "if you don't like Slayer then you can't like metal", not to mention people who actually go and claim that Reign in Blood is the best metal album ever released (which happens surprisingly often, leaving me to wonder if these people have actually listened to any other metal after 1986, or before it, for that matter).

The fact that so many people in the genre consider it the best album should be a clue to the fact that it is certainly amongst the best, if not the best.

It still doesn't mean everyone has to blindly subscribe to that opinion before they can be considered a metal fan.
