It is funny, everytime somebody mentions Joey Jordison there is a bunch of people saying he is great and underrated because he's in slipknot, and another bunch who say "hez shitz because hez in teh shitknot". The fact of the matter is, he is good, yet so is every other metal drummer. The only reason Joey stands out is because hes in a nu metal band and every single other nu metal drummer is awful. If he was unknown and in a death metal band, chances are that he'd be considered quite a lousy drummer.

No, an opinion it may be, but Slipknot is probably the most hated nu-metal band. Whenever I see someone wearing a Slipknot shirt I really want to hurt them, but then I realize that it would be dangerous because most people who listen to Slipknot carry guns and knives.

The Slipknot guitarists are technically brilliant - i know Mick Thompson is into Neo-classical guitar stuff etc... but they just... make bad music - plain and simple. Joey Jordison is the best thing in the band, but it's still not enough to make me like them at all.

Good point there. I mean Van Halen are probably one of my most hated bands and theres no doubt that those guys are extremely skilled at their instruments.

It's too bad almost any tr00 metal fan over-analyze any music they hear. Because you listen Opeth and whatever the fuck other obscure bands you listen to (which, lets be honest, you probably listen to simply to say you listen to stuff that nobody has heard of) doesn't mean your opinion on what is good and what is shitty is perfect.

Here's how I see it. There are a lot of people that wouldn't have got into "good" music if they didn't see a Slipknot video on tv, or hear a song. The majority of their stuff is catchy and easy to follow. The first "metal" band I ever listened to was Slipknot, but now I'm listening to stuff that a lot of you guys listen to.

I like Slipknot. I think they've done a lot for metal in the mainstream by having utilizing clever marketting and catchy music to introduce young people to the entire metal spectrum.

Sure, they're "the most hated nu-metal band" out there, but that's only to you narrow minded people who can't see what they've done for metal, in the commercial sense, over the last couple years.

Well, I did say the last couple years. I know there are people that came in through Metallica and other stuff, but over the past 4-5 years, I'd say Slipknot had a lot to do with the influx in metals fanbase.

I don't like underground music because it's underground, I like it because it sounds good to me. If I only liked underground music, I wouldn't still enjoy Opeth, Iron Maiden, and older Metallica, as I don't really think of any of them as underground.

For the same reason, I don't dislike mainstream because it's mainstream. I dislike it because it just doesn't sound good. And of course there are exceptions, since there are mainstream bands I enjoy listening to as well.

Judging music by the size of its fanbase is just pointless, and a good way to gain enemies.


That said, a lot of people have gotten into metal through Slipknot, but just because you get into metal from them doesn't make them "good". I got into metal through newer Metallica. That led to earlier Metallica, then to other bands, and so forth. But I no longer like new Metallica. It's not what I think of as "good".

But I will concede that people have gotten into more metal through Slipknot.



And this isn't meant to bash Slipknot; if you like them that's perfectly fine and understandable. I'm just pointing out my stance on the "Slipknot" deal.
