Viking metal is a tag based solely on lyrical themes. It's not a subgenre of metal...Amon Amarth sounds nothing like Viking-era Bathory, so what's the point of that?

They're folk-influenced melo-death.

Wintersun and Necrophagist have weird production jobs. It almost sounds like each riffs and drum parts,etc.. it seperatly recorded into sections and pasted in order. Maybe i'm not use to production like that but it's to clean and sounds editted and touched up to hell.

how the fuck do you have 6000 posts since Feb...
Because I used to post in all the game threads and a lot of "Now Playing" threads, but I don't anymore.

I also prefer the term folk to viking, because it covers a broader spectrum of bands.

That's how most bands in any genre record their albums. Very few bands record their albums "live". Each part is recorded separately, fitted together and edited into a full song. It sounds a lot better that way, IMO.

Yes, each track is recorded separately, but I don't know if he is talking about that or if he meant it sounded like a part was recorded once and looped over and over again, rather than playing it each time.

I hear no death metal riffs (or anything death metal related for that matter) in Wintersun whatsoever.

Listen to Nightrage, Ensiferum, etc. These bands are melo-death as well.

Yea sure your the one who thought there was such a thing as speed, viking, battle, and alternative metal also. Viking and battle is Folk Metal. There is no viking and battle metal.

I specifically said on ender's poll that I DID NOT consider Viking and Battle metal genres. They are further classifications of folk metal. I think you're confusing me for someone else. As for speed and alternative, they are considered separate genres.

What in Ensiferum is death metal based? Educate me.

And please do not say vocals.

I wouldn't ever say vocals. Vocals don't determine anything.

Ensiferum utilizes rhythmic interplay to a greater extent than, say, Children Of Bodom (who are power metal), and thus, since a good foundation of rhythm is essential to the idea of death metal, Ensiferum are merely a melodic form of crossbred death-power metal. Sometimes far more power, of course. This is what "melo-death" is. Some traditional death ideas combined with Maiden guitar melodies, galloping sections, etc.

For instance, listen to the beginning of "Old Man"...death metal.

Ensiferum, Wintersun, and Children of Bodom all have the same type of riffing style which is much more similar to power metal than death metal therefore I consider them power metal. When I think melodeath I think Dark Tranquility, At The Gates, Arch Enemy, (late) Carcass, etc just because they have more in common with death metal then power metal while still maintaining melody.

Corrupted
Noothgrush
Grief
dot[.]

I suppose that is fair enough then, it's basically nitpicking.
