So far the new server seems nice and fast

The old one was a dual Xeon 2.4, 2 GB ram 2x73 GB SCSI drives. The main thing is I had some other sites hosted along with UM. The new one is a dual Xeon 3.2, 2 Gb ram 2xSCSI drive but with the MySQL database running off the second drive. So the data gets fed from drive one, drive two handles all the database work. The server is also tweaked specifically and only for this site. That one top of being the only site running on here now. Now just have to get the advertising rolling to pay for it! $300/month on this one.
 
not bad... so the problem with the older server was the database work brutally raping the drives or was it a processor shortage? Or a little column A/Column B?

I'm in a network administrator course at school so I have a serious interest in this stuff :p
 
the specs on the old machine did not seem so bad for this type of forum ... i would think that years of data and shit on top of shit so to speak, took its toll

you pay for this dedicated server at some host I assume?!

Database sharing resources with other sites that were running on the server. At times (as you would notice) it would be perfectly fine but during peak times.. blah it would die out here and there, enough to be annoying. Also having the database now on the second allows for dedicated processing of database only and not serving up pages.

fucker is blazing all day ... hasn't hiccuped once ... even the search is insanely fast
