 smartass!

How does the DVD compare to lets say...(audio and video-wise)

Live Damage- Dark Tranquillity
Opeth- Lamentations
Anathema- The Vision of a Dying Embrace

I'm just afraid the DVD is gonna be sorta low-end bootleg quality pertaining to the video and audio

Haven't seen the DT DVD.

Opeth DVD:
Sound may be JUST slightly better on the Opeth DVD but it's excellent on both. Picture quality and lighting are better on the Katatonia DVD, but Opeth is filmed much better.

Anathema:
Well, Vision of a Dying Embrace ain't good in any way, so I suggest you get the 'Were You There' DVD instead. Katatonia's DVD is better than VOADE but not as good as WYT.

I really wanna get the "were you there" DVD, but unfortunately I can't find it anywhere :erk:

Thanks for the response :)
IMO the sound is quite cool on "Were you there" but the band itself doesn't seem quite fit on this video. The Liverpool gig is a cool idea (with the orchester) but Danny and Vinnie are not so tight... The only real highlight is Lee's performance (Parisienne Moonlight, A Natural Disaster and Temporary Peace) and, of course, her hot outfit... ;)
IMO the Opeth and DT vids are waaaaay better!

I bought the box yesterday and i must say im quite pleased...the Dvd is better than i expected.....brilliant sound...only the crowd was a little sleepy..but i think thats not a real problem....and Wait Outside is a good track indeed.

The crowd is always 'sleepy' there in Krakow, because they're spoiled shitless with DVD-recordings. For Krakow measures I actually think they're quite active on the Katatonia DVD, I see people jumping in the mid-front. On the Dark Tranquillity DVD the crowd is the worst I think, very few and totally dead..

Good Krakow-recorded DVD's are Green Carnation and this new Katatonia DVD.

I picked up the Dvd on Friday but I was away for the w-end and I'll watch it now...
I'll post my comments on the Dvd later (so far I must agree with Cerulean)

First thing I noticed when I opened the box and gave a look at the booklet....wow...but I know those photos, I'm 100% sure they were taken at the Summer Breeze festival by a friend of mine...and then looked at the credits and found her name:D
I was very pleased that they put her photos on the booklet, I think she has done really good live photos so far and then it's nice to see the name of someone you know on a Katatonia work!!!!!
The track "wait outside" sounds really good, very "toolish", especially the way Jonas is singing and yeah there's a kind of stoner rock riff at the beginning and the bass sounds really cool!!!

As for the dvd and the crowd, at Kata concerts people don't move that much...( a part for me and my friend, we really live up the scene, he he...)
Anyways in about 10 days I'm going to see them again and must say that no Dvd could ever be compared to the live experience....The real thing is much better!!!! Can't wait for it!

edit: actually I've been trying to watch it on my dvd player for TV and it doesn't support the NTSC format..shit!
I have to watch it on my brother's laptop...
Now the question is: is there another version of the DVD or are they all NTSC???
It sucks I can't watch it on TV and on my computer I don't have a DVD player so I have to borrow my brother's PC or laptop...wahhhh!

Since it's out in Europe and it's still to be released in the US, I wouldn't think there's gonna be a PAL version. Would be a bit strange if they release the European version first, in NTSC foirmat and then the US version (if that version is different at all..) in PAL format.

So, I guess you're gonna have to borrow your bro's laptop or buy a new TV/DVD player ;).

mine came in the post today :D
havnt watched the dvd yet cause its black and white on my playstation 2. grrr! i hate that!!
Wait outside is really cool. the start riff does sound a bit like tool, im not a fan of tool. the chorus is excellent though, great stuff indeed!

I really can't see a reason why releasing a NTSC format in Europe and selling it to Europeans...
I think many of us would have preferred to watch the DVD on TV...and I don't think there are many Dvd players that can read a NTSC format...( at least mine is a "pioneer" and can't read it..)
Well after all I can watch it on computer and maybe I'll buy a Dvd player for my PC too, but yet..I think that's a little bit annoying!
Why not realising a PAL format for Europe and a NTSC for the other countries??I mean I guess in Sweden they also have a PAL format, or not?

I didn't get the box set yet but I thought I'd pipe in that the Dream Theater DVD is very sweet.. :D And also the new Strapping Young Lad. I might check out the Katatonia DVD when the next one comes out, later this year was it? o.o

If there was to be a version in PAL format, they would've released it now I guess. The version that's out now is the European version.

I have no problems watching NTSC, I have a pretty cheap Samsung DVD player and Samsung wide-screen TV.

well, what to say about the dvd ? I haven´t seen the whole dvd yet, but the picture quality, wasn´t the best, but hey, i heard it was recorded with a handcam so, probably can´t be better. the sound was ok... but the fans on that show wasn´t the best, they could have been more "alive" :)
all some all it is quiet a good dvd first release for katatonia, cant wait for the proffessional dvd to come...

yes you're right, I know there is only this version, but still I don't know why they privileged the NTSC format instead of the PAL...maybe because it is supposed to sell more for the American market?
or maybe I'm the only one who has got an expensive Dvd player that can read only PAL formats....

I must agree that however the quality is not so good as I expected, especially when there are coloured lights, the contrast is quite high...

Handcam??? How on earth would they ever get all those angles with a mere handcam?? The whole show is filmed in this polish TV studio by an entire professional filming crew. Quite regularly you see cameramen walking through the picture and those sure ain't handcams they're holding..

ok today I re-watched the show(always on my bro's laptop where unfortunately I cannot hear it in dolby surround, but maybe there's a way to connect the pc to my home theatre system...) and my impressions are:

musically speaking the gig is really good. I'm happy they played "Burn the remembrance" because it's the first time I hear it live and the song is really nice (I hope they will play it again at some live shows, even if it must be quite difficult for Jonas to sing that high in some parts of the song)

I noticed how much the guys have improved during their last gigs, it seems that now they are a lot more self-confident on stage than on that video! At least now Mattias and Anders do much more posing, also together:)

As for the direction....I must admit that after a while you feel a little bit dizzy trying to follow all that changing of scenes and framings...too many fast zooms in and zooms out, alternation of blurred and sharp images...and sometimes the montage is really too fast and doesn't follow the music...well at least I would have liked to see the person who plays the solo while you hear it...or just to stop for a while on an image, a longer close up and so on....
I'm not an expert of Dvds, so I can't compare it with many others (but for example the Lamentations Dvd was better directed, even if it isn't one of the best to take as an example...)
A part from that and a part from the image quality which isn't the top, on the whole it's nice and I can't complain, considering also that is not their official DVD but just a bonus in that box.

And they did say that the reason it wasn't an official DVD release was because the dvd wasn't up to their standards, but it's nice of them to include it in the set. I must find a way to get it...
