. . . titled 'The Wretched Spawn'. It won't be released until February 2004, but I can't tell you what it sounds like. They decided to copyright protect it by putting a LOUD, one second long BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP every 15 seconds on every song but 3. The song cuts out completely for the BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP. What a bunch of crap! There's no way in hell I'll review that shit . . .

Cool cover art, though.

Yeah I just got this in today. Haven't heard it, but fucking hell, what a cover. I'm surprised they didn't have one of those little midget-demons coming out of her arse.

Hopefully it won't as decrapitated as Gore Obsessed was. Seems like every other album of theirs is really good, hopefully that's still the case.

Gotta say though, with all the massive copyright protection going on, it's not like bands are coming out protesting to all this right? I mean, why haven't CC issued a statement of some kind explaining that this isn't their idea?

I mean, I know Metallica went and did the whole Napster thing because they didn't want people getting their music for free, but aren't all these underground bands with copyright protection on their CD's sitting back quietly in fear of backlash and letting bands like Metallica take all the heat?

Copyright protection is a slap in the face of the fans from the record labels. THey should be ashamed. They wouldn't be functioning without the fans.

If Metal Blade is so worried about reviewers (like me) ripping this stuff for others, they shouldn't send out so many promos. I never sell any of my promos. I never put the stuff on the net before it's released. None of the other labels do that copywrite crap.

Agreed - I think any old free-server site webzine can get Metal Blade promos. They should qualify you first because I'm sure there are tonnes of promos that get sent out and never reviewed. A label like Golden Lake is small - they can't afford to send out so many, so they stop sending if you stop reviewing.

Anyway, the point is npearce, there are several webzine folks who will rip the CDs early. Why? I have no idea. And it only takes one person to rip the CD and then the world can download it. I fucking hate MP3's unless its for sampling purposes.

We just finished an interview with King Diamond. He said that the reason why they couldn't tour for Abigail 2 is because Metal Blade have lost revenues of approx. 30% through illegal downloading alone. If the labels rely on album sales to put their artists on the road, then these bands aint gonna tour no more.

Well, let's put it this way: Metal Blade revenues dropped 30% for the year 2002. How, I have no idea, but I'm sure some of it has to be attributed to downloading.

Go to the GMD forum and see how many threads/discussions you can find that go along the lines of "how many songs do you have?". Unbelievable - in this day and age, people don't compare the sizes of their album collections, but the number of free MP3s they can store on a hard disk.

Sure, and it's absolutely disgusting, but what I'm saying is that they ARE pulling that figure out of their ass. There is no way in hell they can prove that it has ANYTHING to do with file sharing.

Look man, you can't argue with the King Diamond.

Yeah, agreed, there is no way to prove where the revenue loss came from, but for a fact, labels lost shit loads of money last year through sudden loss of album sales. They are trying to put 2 + 2 together, and this sudden surge of various copyright protection techniques is a knee-jerk reaction.

I agree that abuses of file sharing have become epidemic (another disgusting example was when Chris Dick of Digital Metal posted an advance review of Damnation guess where, only to receive threats for not making the album public.), but that loss of revenue cannot be solely attributed to its effects...exactly what did Metal Blade release last year? :)
