soloing: character/style or boredom/limitation?

VERY nice, liking that a lot! shits all over my 2 drunk solos.

here they are: ;)

drunk1
drunk2

(the first one still has some fast shit in it though)

I tend to play better when I'm just a little bit buzzed. It helps me get over the "red recording light syndrome"...where I play everything perfectly, until I hit the record button. :) But, I haven't played like that in long, long time.

and lots of legato cause my right hands sucks.

This is my BIGGEST down fall.. my right hand is fucking retarded when it comes to alternate picking fast shit....

I also will fall into a rut of using certain sweep patterns constantly.. and there are a couple penatonic licks I use waaay too much.

-P

Chops are all good but you could try some other shit to break out of a rut, I like learning a whacky scale or coming up with some kooky FX chain, that usually helps me play some different then the usual wank.

I have noticed that even tho I have never been a fan of Slayer, my solos seem to make as much sense as Kerry's soloing, but atleast the style is somewhat consistent, tho my technique sucks some major horse cock.

I tell every band that comes into the studio just PLAY, I don't care if it makes sense or not. if it fits the song and has the aggression and mood thats what its all about. whether is a slayer'ish kinda of thing, or arpeggios from hell. It needs to FIT and enhance the part. I hate wankery for the sake of wankery.

Ok well since we're all sharing and shit ...

Jacked up lead for unmixed new song "Future Negative Fantasy"
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/594184/FNF+Solo.mp3

Needed something intense. 2 punch ins ... one is immediately after the 1st big sweep. Reason being that when I did it I seriously couldn't fucking believe I nailed it that perfect and I actually just stopped playing as soon as I hit it. I was hanging with some red wine on this before I started tracking as well.

Solo for another of our new tunes "One More Taste" comes in at like 3:38
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/594184/One More Taste.mp3

Sensitive tune needed sensitive solo. Only thing I hear similar out of the 2 examples is everything is based out of melody .. I'm not a shredder by any means ... and the style of melody is completely different based on the context of the music underneath

Laugh all you want :p

Nothing to laugh about there, Carlos!:kickass:

Like you said, since we're sharing and all:

Quick test mix of an unfinished project, that will EVENTUALLY get finished with Johhny Lokke's vocals (he wrote the lyrics and melody) when we both find time. Sharing solo duty here. First half, me. Second half, Arto (AKA Decimator)...an awesome guitarist!

Sharing is caring! OK here are 3 guest solos I was asked to do for 3 totally different sounding bands, and wanted to give them each the appropriate treatment for the song while still having my own flava

Viathyn - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2183128/3 Sirenum Scopuli.mp3 - solo is at around 5:15, more traditiional sounding obvously for this one but still threw in a bit of dissonance to keep it up my alley

Day One - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2183128/Parasite.mp3 - solo at 1:50ish - wanted to make this one more crazy so used the whammy and then some glitchy FX in the middle section

Truck - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2183128/05 Sad Elevens (feat Rodney Medwid).mp3 solo at 2:35ish - just kinda fucked up with FX and improv wank but the song was supposed to be really angry so I went for that! :p

@ Mark - Thanks man. Just checked out that solo of yours ... fuckin LOVE it dude! I swear to someone I immediately felt like I was back in high school but in a good way. Love the way you nail that note at like :29

Awesome

@ Jay - Thank you very much buddy, I really appreciate the kind words both on my band and my playing. I wonder if I could even play that 1st solo again, been a couple years since I did that :p

Gonna check out your clip next

As for the Iced Earth reference .. wait until I post the next of our tunes in rate my mix section ;)

Thanks! I'm mostly working on my own sort of 80's metal revival these days. It just makes me feel good to work on it. :) That last bizarre run at the end is actually my tip of the hat to Sir Lynch. It's actually the closing run of the solo on "Kiss Of Death". :)

Can totally relate to this, as virtually everything I do ends up sounding like Peter Wichers to some extent.

1:38 - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/392637/MP3/Writing/YouniversalFeb20.mp3 - I've posted this before and have never had time to properly mix it or anything but yeah, decently Wichers-esque.

It gets worse, though.

1:12 - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/392637/MP3/Writing/10-23Glaloped.mp3 - It's the GTC3 competition song, but the only version I have in MP3 so minus vocals and with my original mix/POD gtrs. Basically all Wichers.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/392637/MP3/Writing/LeadPicked.mp3 - Unfinished/unwritten last section, maybe less Wichers than before, but definitely Swedish, nonetheless!

Even in my band, the one true 'solo' on the upcoming record has total Wichers moments. From a tracking mix:

I just can't get away from that dude's phrasing.

Wow Jeff. I have a new found respect for you. (not that I didn't already respect you :D) Nice work on those. Everyone's clips on here have been great sounding.

I've been told I emulate Petrucci (which is no insult :p), but still some way to go.

I've always improv'd solos when recording and some parts will sound great and other parts not so good... Although I have comped in the past and come up with some great results, I don't necessarily like this approach because I can't always remember what I played!

So recently I've taken to transcribing my solos in to Guitar Pro as I go along. It'll come in handy if I ever write that epic solo and have to play it live.

Also, I find the half speed function on Guitar Pro very useful. All my drums are GM mapped, and of course my synths and all time sigs and tempos... So it's easy to quickly come up with most the work by just importing MIDI files then manually punching in the guitars.

When you slow it down, you can really hear how each note works or clashes with the backing track and I find myself drastically altering solo parts and using fingerings and scale runs I'd probably never use otherwise. It's kinda cool to take each note at a time, think about what's going on theory wise and use a bit of hit and miss analysing each note. Something which you can't really do when holding the guitar!

The only downside is when you get a bit over ambitious and have trouble playing a solo you wrote!
