PYRAMAZE - Legend of the Bone Carver

I met the vocalist at last year's ProgPower, and I didn't really put 2 and 2 together since I hadn't heard Pyrmaze at the time. Thankfully they're performing this year and could be the saving grace of the overall lacklustre roster.

KIUAS - Reformation

This one came from Zod. I've only given it a couple of spins, but so far I'm impressed. It's got a Finnish sound, but it's not melo-pop by any means. In fact, this could be melo-death with clean 'speed metal' vocals (not quite thrash, and not power, something in between). To me it's like Ensiferum meets Dark Tranquility meets Lost Horizon.

Lance is the star of this show. He's got amazing range. Their debut was in my Top 2 or 3 of 2004. But then again, I love all his work; Balance of Power, Avian (with David Ellefson), etc. By the way JK, if you like vocals, you should check out Balance of Power's "Perfect Balance". Very Rychian.

This will be my recommendation when the recommendation threads start back up. I love this shit. It's got a bit of an old school vibe to it (at least to my ear). It's one of the more varied, interesting Power Metal discs (in the case of Kiuas, I'm using the term loosely) to come out in quite a while. Going to be Top 5 for sure.

Speaking of Power Metal, have you given that Pharaoh CD any more spins?

Zod

Yeah the Pharoah CD rules, although I'm not sure if I can listen to it all the way through in one sitting (like I can Pyramaze).

I have a Balance of Power CD-R somewhere, I'll dig it out.

Nevermore - This Godless EndeavoUr

Better than I remembered, and I've grown to really like some of the songs I previously dismissed, such as "Final Product" or "Acid Words". Maybe it just works better in this bludgeoning humidity. It's quite an exhausting listen just because there's so much going on, and so the last half seems less memorable right now. However, "Born" and "Sentinent 6" are my two favoUrites -- such stunning songs -- while "Bittersweet Feast" is the expendable 'skip track'.

It's interesting because for a band I've always been on the fence with, I actually own all their CDs except for the debut. :hypno:

See, I like a lot of stuff many would call Power Metal but I consider just Traditional Metal. When I think of the term Power Metal, I envision flowers, elfs, leprechauns, rainbows, sweaty gay men in leotards, and erections.

yeah, Twisted Tower Dire's "The Isle of Hydra" ... been meaning to pick it up for a couple of years and finally got around to snagging it off Ebay... oh man are those songs ever awesome!

Might as well name drop myself...

Airged L'Amh
Brocas Helm
Adramelch
Battle Ram
Damien Thorne
Cloven Hoof
Martiria
Omen
Running Wild
Twilight Odyssey
Wotan
Cauldron Born
Dark Quarterer
Helstar
Isen Torr
Ritual Steel

Some people would argue that the above are Power Metal...fuck that. Some try to say that early Fates Warning or Manilla Road are Power Metall too...WTF?

Virgin Steele I think bridges alot of gaps between traditional and power metal. There later work leans more towards the power metal side in my opinion. Pretty much every Virgin Steele album kicks serious ass in my opinion. Demilich if you havent heard them I would suggest picking up either The Marriage of Heaven and Hell pt II or House of Atreus Act I or II.

I would say the music is similar in the epic metal sense. I've only heard a little of Solstice, but it seems like utilize a bit of a doom sound, wheras TTD is more straightforward classic metal.
