sold my ibanez 7 string, and got some cash to buy a new bass that will hopefully have a bit better tonality than my peavey millennium.

the 2 basses I can afford in the local used market are a spector legend 5 string with a 35" scale length, or an ibanez sr405 from 1996. both Im sure are a bit better than my current bass.

but Im not sure which to choose, the spector looks nice, and the longer scale length appeals to me, but the bolt on neck looks kinda sketchy. Im not sure how much sustain the instrument will have.

Ive never played either bass. Ibanez basses I have played have been pretty nce, especially 5 string models.

there is also a godin freeway 5 string bass for sale as well.

any thoughts or advice? thanks!

Dude, don't let the bolt-on construction spook you, there are SO many other factors that contribute to sustain - what are the other specs of 'em? (especially wood types) That's what I'd be more concerned with

Spector Legend Classic 5-String Bass Features:

NS body
Quilted maple top
3-piece rock maple bolt-on neck
35" scale
24-fret rosewood fingerboard
Deluxe cast bridge
Black hardware
High-impedance, passive, USA EMG-SSD pickups
Spector Tone Pump Jr.
2 -band active tone circuit

Woah that Spector costs alot! It looks like my Q5 Pro but with passive pickups. Ive not tried many basses but the bolt-on is fine and Spector is quality!
