Ever since I discovered “Shiv” (Absolutes), I’ve had affection for Californians Stavesacre. A few releases down the line, the boys are at it again and Bull Takes Fighter EP drops to only the most dedicated of fans. In short, it’s good.

Aptly enough, the EP commences with the title track, namely “Bull Takes Fighter.” The former starts frantically then Mark Saloman – with his unique, patented vox – enters. Whether you fancy them or not, Stavesacre’s inclusion of emotion within their compositions is most assuredly notable. “Time Honored Tradition” begins melodiously, and might sit comfortably within a Weezer album. The group retains the ever-expansive, rock vibe that has laced so many of their previous releases. “Time Honored Tradition” – to put it differently – could easily be placed alongside material from Stavesacre or Speakeasy. “Next Age” is more adventurous, determined, and engaging. The aforementioned sees the band parallel emotive hits such as “Sundown Motel,” and others. “Handful of Words,” unfortunately, is ushered in with a vocal cliché, but the cliché is quelled soon after birth. The lofty vocals are perhaps the centerpiece for “Handful of Words.”

If you’re a Stavesacre fan, you probably already own Bull Takes Fighter EP. Citing the fact that the record is an extremely limited pressing, those of you who wish to own it may have to resort to eBay. In spite of the notion that Stavesacre haven’t changed their sound whatsoever since the stellar Speakeasy, I’m still anticipating the next full-length.
