I love the sound of distorted bass in death methulz, the other day I was watching some live videos from Carcass and the guy was not using any distortion it sounds GAY

I usually do not have that much distortion because it would make a real mess out of everything, I have enough to cut through and to add mid and high range

I didn't use any of my own gear except for the bass itself on the live gig, I was promised good equipment but when we got there they had two really big guitar amp heads, each with a 4x12 speaker cabinet and I was left with a tiny 60 watt combo amplifier with a single 10 speaker in it which they via microphone ran through the PA. I was not ahppy at all since my bass sounded about as brutal as a flute or something, next time I am bringing my own amplifier and pedals.
