Stereo System

does anyone actually use REAL stereo systems anymore? you know, with components and big speakers? no boombox or compact system or dvd player BULLSHIT, seriously, FUCK all that shit

did until it blew out (was close to 30 years old); i don't really care about hearing it "properly" because that's impossible unless you knew EXACTLY what the musicians wanted their stuff to sound like *shrug*

i recommend big black stereos with power and might

Where do I go about getting such a behemoth of a setup? :)

If you can answer a Q as off the wall as, "What would you do if you were invisible for a day?", then you most certainly can adequately respond to this inquiry. :heh:

My web searching leads me to contraptions such as this.

ok fine. i can't actually recommend brands and shit but what i do know is that i would prefer, any day, to buy a used 80's era component system by maybe pioneer, technics, yamaha etc. instead of some new crappy compact system with flashing LCD screen, bass boost and 3-disc cd changer.

Well I can understand your preference. However, there is a practicality issue that comes in to play. As in I don't know how wise it would be to spend hard earned greenbacks on a piece of equipment that is as old as I am.

Lurch assist me in this matter my beanstalk dwelling friend, this is your field of expertise, as I surmised from previous postings.

i have an old JVC cd player, an old Pioneer tape deck, an old Yamaha receiver... you get the idea
it's pieced together from various old junk but it works cool (but i need to get new speakers and a new record player -- that's one thing that really makes sense to buy new)

Take Eriks Yamaha Amp, and make it look like a better version and take out the radio and make it JVC, and then take 2 high quality pioneer speakers from the 80's. Hook it up to your computer. Then you have what I use.

I have a proper "old school" setup and I love it: separate amp, cd, vinyl player, vinyl pre-amp and a pair of cheap but decent speakers. And also, last but most certainly not least, a pair of really good head phones. I think head phones give you the best musical experience, plus that most (affordable) speakers can't handle music as complex as extreme metal, something that even cheaper head phones manage really well.

As for recomendations, go for stuff made by NAD, Harman Kardon or perhaps Camebridge and you should be allright even if you purchase their cheapest stuff.

 ... spaffe got NAD :kickass:

got a spearates system also ... a DENON reciever, about 4 years old and PANASONIC CD/DVD player and 5.1 sub/sat system

but mostly i listen to shit in my car or on the pc

I was wanting to put together a component stereo a little while back, but instead I just got some hugeass computer speakers.

But I seriously couldn't put one together for $200-$300 like I wanted, so that was probably the best option for me at the time </imgay>

because you didn't look at used stuff i bet. you can get a real decent system for $300 if you forget all about trying to impress girls with it. it's not like consumer level amplifier/cd player/cassette deck technology has improved significantly in the last 20 years so why buy new shit?

I have 2 shelf BIC America speakers, JVC dual tape deck, Onkyo 6-cd carousel changer, and an old Technics receiver that I stole from my college's bar while trashed one night. I am looking into getting a better quality receiver.

Yep. I have a circa 2001 Kenwood 600 watt receiver and a 5-disc changer hooked up to 2 150 watt Sony speakers. The receiver is actually capable of all this 5.1 and digital decoding shit but all I use is the "stereo" and "tone" features. The surround speakers went in the garbage years ago.
