I don't post here very often but I finally have something useful to share. I was setting up a pedalboard and came across a pedal in a photo that I'd never seen before. It said that it was a Sonic Research ST-200 strobe tuner. I checked their website (www.turbo-tuner.com) and found that they were selling them for $129 including shipping. After reading some reviews I pulled the trigger and bought it. After fucking with it for a few days I have to say I'm stunned by the quality construction, accuracy, and ease of use of this thing. It picks up each note very quickly and absolutely SMOKES my Boss Tu-12. Not a sexy new purchase but so fucking worthwhile.

Yo Todd, that's badass dude, and a lot cheaper than the (apparently really poorly-manufactured) Peterson Strobo-stomp; I guess accuracy is the only variable left, but if you say it's better than the TU-2 then that's more than fine for me in a live environment! I'll respond to your email shortly btw dude; been a busy week and...eventful, travel-filled weekend :D

No problem getting back to me Marcus. I tuned my guitar with the Boss and then checked it against the strobe and the difference between the 2 was significant. That's all well and good but the real proof is in the ears, and to mine, it sounds much better.

Off topic... those Uberschall clips are KILLING me. Life was good before I heard them and now... fuck.

i had this unit here for one day.
when i saw the youtube videos and how
fast and accurate the tuner worked i had to have it!

when it arrived i was suprised by the overall quality,
it's very well built and the design is very nice also.

then i started tuning my electrics, my bass, my acoustic (has an built in pickup) etc.
it worked OK but not as good as it should have worked (refering to reviesw etc.)

i decited to ship it back because i didn't notice any BIG differences,
but i also have to admit that my financial status played a big role here.
i just thought that i don't need a 159€ guitar tuner and that i could use the money for something better.

i'll give it another try surley but my first impression was rather not that good.

cheers
S.

What about those rackmount tuning systems? like KORG for instance, I mean some say they're the best... are those in any way better/precise than the BOSS tuner/pedal, or any other tuning pedal?

Any experiences with those?

Well they're really fucking expensive anyway :goggly: Personally, though, since I'm under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that strobe tuners are the best and most accurate, it seems strange to me to pay more for a non-strobe tuner that's rackmounted, rather than a strobe tuner pedal (or even just a strobe tuner that chills on top of your rack, though I guess part of the appeal of a rack tuner is being able to see it from the front of the stage...)

I think most of the Boss/Korg/Sabine rack tuners are still built on the same technology that the floor pedal tuners are. The only tuners that are supposed to be of equal or better quality are the higher end Peterson's. My band plays a lot of really dissonant stuff so when we're out of tune it sounds even more unpleasant than we intended. I noticed a big difference between the Boss and the ST-200 at rehearsal the other night and when we hit the studio in a few weeks I'll be curious to see if I can tell a difference. I would rather have spent the money on something a little bit more fun but in the end, if the shit's out of tune, the greatest guitar tone on this earth isn't going to matter.

Yeah, I can understand they're overprized, due to the commodity of having them set up there on your rack... but if they are actually more accurate for their sole purpose, that would be even better.

Right now I have the small KORG hand tuner haha, so I'm still waiting to get one that suits me better for stage performance... not in a rush really, though I'm getting one eventually... I saw one of those damn KORGs rackmounted the other day at a gig, and at least it does appeal to your sight... so many goddamn LEDs blingin' in there, just seems as it won't miss a note.

I'd just like to know which one is the best for real... so if anyone's got some experience testing those thingies, it'd be much appreciated.

That's the big unanswered question, though, and one I'm curious about as well!

If you looking for a cheap floor tuner with strobe, the korg pitch black has strobe as far as i know. Was looking into getting one myself.

It only has a "strobe like" display mode, while real strobe tuners work in a completely different way (google/wikipedia if you want to know more :))

Unlike a mechanical strobe tuner, the Turbo Tuner is 100% solid state. There are no moving parts to wear out, and this makes it smaller and less expensive, and gives it a faster response.

And defeats the purpose of a true strobe tuner? Is there any way to actually recreate the effect used on a mechanical one with electronics?

Btw: Yay, 100 posts, after years of lurking :D

Those damn Peterson tuners must be really something... can't seem to find an AutoStrobe 490 (rackmount) below $600...

Hmm, that is rather annoying - but what else would you need besides just one ordinary instrument input?

Well, it has a built-in DI output, which could be pretty useful for reamping purposes, I guess, so if you don't have one already...

That ST-200 looks good for the price, but it still won't be as good as having the classic disk type readout like Peterson uses in all of their products.

If you want to go the software route, this is the best tuner I've ever encountered.

I dunno man, maybe it's something on my end, but I've regularly used that plugin with two different guitars and two different interfaces and it's always been unbelievably twitchy and always jumps up an octave above the note I'm tuning, which is quite vexing  When I have some spare cash I really wanna pick up a Peterson Stroboflip (the desktop one) and have it always connected to my DI box from the inst. thru

EDIT: And I always set the sensitivity slider on G-tune only about 1/5th of the way up, and it still tweaks out constantly :(
