In Austria, with the Euro everything got a lot more expensive, especially the little things of daily need, where shops had a tendency to round a lot and always upwards. The exchange rate was 1= 13,7603 ATS, which is not very easy to calculate with, so obviously many shops converted with 1=10 ATS.
As mentioned by Morgana, prices were already increased heavily about 1 year before the came, because later it was forbidden to increase prices for some time. All the vending machines for coffee, drinks, park tickets... do not accept the small units like 1,2 and 5 cent, which also caused an increase of prices.
The only advantage for me (personally) is: -zone-internal money transfer is much easier now, banks are not allowed to take more charges for a transfer Austria - Germany than for Austria-Austria (makes the ordering of CDs cheaper ), but this regulation is new (works since this summer, i guess) and did not start with the currency change.
PS. Lately, someone in Austria payed with a 300 note (which does not exist) in a restaurant and got a lot of money back. As picture, the 300 note showed naked women....
