I still don't like Summoning. I've given up on them entirely after years of trying to understand their appeal. It's not that I find them boring (I listen to dark ambient for christ's sake), it's that I find them intolerably corny. I actually like the idea of Summoning more than I like the actual music, which is infuriating because I feel like this is something I should like. I just can't stand the execution of it, which I think compels some to look at me as though I'm being shallow or something, as though I'm letting some insignificant aesthetic thing get in the way of my appreciation. But I think that's wrong-headed. The various ways a song can be executed are also part of the musical language. Some of this stuff sounds epic and I would go so far as to say that some of the compositions are in some sense quite good, but then they have to go and ruin it everytime by throwing in that Casio on generic flute setting or whatever. I wouldn't enjoy hearing Beethoven played on kazoos (if that were even possible), so why should I overlook this sort of factor when I'm listening to metal? I feel like if I ignored this band for the rest of my life I wouldn't be missing out on much.
