Hi everyone,

I am currently doing my Personal Interest Project for my Society and Culture major work for school, and I am researching the effect of Heavy Metal music on young people - focusing on the whole issue of Metal influencing murder and other violence. As part of this, I need to survey people between the ages of 13-21 to find out about how the music has or hasn’t affected their process of socialisation and forming of identity, and whether or not Heavy Metal really has a negative impact on adolescents. It would be greatly appreciated if you could fill this survey in to help me with this project, you will remain anonymous. Thank you :)

Please note that "Heavy Metal" is referring to Metal and all its subgenres.

Positive. Lyrics are a great way to portray emotional conversation. Generally a song wont effect me beyond just the spoken word. Occasionally the artist or artists story can provoke profound emotional understanding where a listener can feel connected to the meaning of the lyrics. For me Dimebag Darrel has been a huge influence on my music and lifestyle choices. I look at his life and strive to make everyday a chance to better myself musically and enjoy the company and friends we cannot take for granted.

[x] Yes (go to question 17)

Positive in a sense because it made me realize how messed up the world really is outside of everything that is fed to us through the news. It taught me that everything that is fed to us through the media is a fabrication of the real truth. It has also made me realize how messed up organized religion is. For more intellectual stuff, it has gotten me back into researching myth and history, as well as reading different kinds of books

18. In what other ways might Heavy Metal have influenced you? (E.g. fashion, language, other interests, etc)
Metal has completely shaped the person who I am today: I'm constantly seen with some form of band shirt on. It has also made me figure out who I truly am as a person and what my system of beliefs are. I honestly have no idea where I would be without it. It is the very base of my life.
