Allan Holdsworth is from England. He might be the greatest.
So is Guthrie Govan. He too is pretty damn good.
Is Malmsteem from England? I don't really like his live stuff even though you laugh your head off.
Steve Vai is not, he's from Ermerica. Prolly the top live (show)guitarist playing now.

I wasnt nessecarly saying all Schadnavians are great guitar players, i made the statement based on the fact that the majority of the guitar players i love to listen to, happen to be from that area, ex: Mikeal Akerfeldt, 
Johan Reinholdz, Christofer Malmström...
Of course America has people like satch, vai, loomis, johnson, amoung others.

As for starting rock music, don't be stupid. Elvis happened to be the first rock artist, and he was straight from America. Rock was, and is, too grounded in blues and jazz for it to have come from Europe, where there was absolutely none in the 40's
