Hey there peoples, I'm not sure if Symphony X are old school as I'm not sure when they started out, although they do have an old school sound to them.

If I am allowed to discuss them, could anyone recommend a good album for me to get of them? I've heard a couple of songs and was blown away. They're brilliant :worship:

They play progresive metal. This genre of metal is growing very fast and is my favorite genre at the moment.

I would recommend:

* The Divine Wings of Tragedy
* V: The New Mythology Suite

But for you the album to start with is "The Odyssey". Check it out and let us know how you like it. I you want to explore the genre some more I have tons of good bands for you.

Btw, there is a Symphony X forum at UM here:

YES get The Odyssey! You Must Immedeatly!
Ditto! Fantastic group of musicians, and the drummer's pretty good too! I have this record & also The Damnation Game, however, Odyssey, I prefer, mainly because it's the first record I heard by these guys.
I imagine anything that you pick up from this band should be killer. Also check out another killer band that Byrant turned me onto Vanden Plas!!!!

Cool symphonic/prog metal. The guitarist/songwriter Micheal Romeo writes all of te symphony parts and even writes that kind of stuff for other bands. Don't get me wrong, they symphonic parts aren't overdone. It's used tastefully and sparingly enough. The vocalist Russell Allen is also tough to beat. He is truely one of the best vocalists in metal today. My suggestion would be just to work in reverse chronological order. I would start with "The Odyssee" then "V Mythology Suite."

As always I agree word for word. :)

I agree with Bryant in everything but I would start with THE DIVINE WINGS OF TRAGEDY and then Twilight in olympus, or you can try perhaps their live record "live in the edge of forever" which has some of their best songs till "V".

ROMEO AND ALLEN RULES!!!
