Symphony X Song Tournament: Vote for the Best

Candlelight Fantasia
A Fool's Paradise (I love Wicked, but I love this song more. A filler song at first sight, but actually filled with fun instrumental bits, good singing, and the final chorus is one of my favourite moments on V)
Prelude (Never liked Sea of Lies. Always liked Prelude. I've heard lots of Dies Irae adaptions in metal, but this is the best by far)
Odyssey.

Candlelight Fantasia
Wicked
Sea of Lies
The Odyssey

1. Candlelight is possibly the band's most heartfelt song, and pitting it up against an average at best power metal tune makes it the clear winner.

2. This one was tougher, but I can't get over that 13 riff in Wicked. It's just a tighter, groovier song when compared to the more thrashy Fool's Paradise. The chorus and classical interlude in the latter are fantastic, though.

3. I've always found Sea of Lies (like Sins and Shadows) to be overrated, but it's still a solid (full) song, so Prelude stands no chance.

4. What a joke.

Candlelight Fantasia- despite I absolutely love Paradise Lost and Set The World On Fire in particular, Candlelight Fantasia is one of their peaks
A Fool's Paradise - no contest
Prelude - I'm serious!
The Odyssey - no game.

A Fool's Paradise - Even one of the weakest songs (but still damn good) from V easily wins over Wicked.

Fuck all the Wicked hate

1. Candlelight Fantasia - This is the uber-melodic Symphony X that I miss most. Of course it wins.

2. Wicked - "Fool's Paradise" certainly has some shining instrumental moments, but the groove in this track is just sick and Russell's vocals are simply stellar.

3. Sea Of Lies - Maybe overplayed; but not overrated.

4. The Odyssey - While I love Dragon's Den to death, c'mon this is a magnum opus masterwork.

1. Candlelight Fantasia. A beautiful song, very emotional, with great lyrics. Set the World on Fire is decent (especially the beginning, right up to that mediocre verse riff..), but it stands little chance against a classic like Candlelight.

2. A Fool's Paradise. I like the groove and feel of Wicked, but overall I guess I prefer Fool's. It has a really good chorus, lots of tasty church organ, and of course an awesome solo section. I also like how it so smoothly goes over to the beautiful Rediscovery Segue.

3. Sea of Lies. A good, solid traditional Symphony X tune. Great verses and a nice solo section with that classic unison part. Prelude is a great opener though.

4. Well,eh,uhm...The Odyssey of course! :D A 24 minutes long masterpiece with so many great parts it almost hurts. The epic intro, the epic ending, and everything in between. In fact, the only part I don't think is that great is Part 5(Sirens).

Candlelight Fantasia - :tickled:
A Fool's Paradise - Holy freaking Bach! This is one of the best on V. Wicked is great but no contest here.
Prelude - Prelude is awesome. Sea of Lies is a boring overplayed song that all the noobs for some reason are crazy about which is why it's overplayed which is why it's boring.
The Odyssey - .

Set the World on Fire, I don't like this that much either, but I just cannot stand Candlelight...
Wicked, this was basically a coin flip since I love both.
Sea of Lies, no contest.
The Odyssey, no contest.

That song is much better live.

Definitely. Hell, I think almost every song SX has sounds better live. The only exceptions I think are the more complex, ornamented songs on V such as Communion, or some of the segues like Death of Balance.

After seeing them about a year ago, I couldn't believe just how much I liked some of the stuff from PL and IC that I never cared for on the album. And when I went back to listen to the albums again after the fact, I just thought to myself "Man, the raw energy just isn't there."
