Symphony X Song Tournament: Vote for the Best

Revelations — No contest here.

The Bird-Serpent War/Cataclysm — This really sucks. I love Walls of Babylon, definitely my favorite track from PL. Too bad it came up against one of the gems from the best album of all time.

Evolution (The Grand Design) — A no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Transcendence — ...and it's not even a song. Children is one of the bullshit tracks in IC. It's like the only melody here is Russel's vocal lines. No wonder he likes it so much, it's sounds like it's based entirely on those.

I second this. Nothing to add, really.
Well, perhaps I don't love Walls of Babylon. Regardless, my picks are the same.

Well, let's see what the results are, then.

Revelation beats Out of the Ashes 13-2
The Walls of Babylon beats The Bird-Serpent War 9-6
Evolution beats The End of Innocence 13-2
Transcendence beats Children of a Faceless God 8-7

Revelation and Evolution both won in a fairly decisive manner. Walls was pretty close, but Transcendence was closer- good thing I didn't really like its opponent either.

1. King of Terrors (All around a great song, and more memorable than the Turning).

2. The Damnation Game (This was a really tough one. In the end, I just don't like the studio version of Church at all; frankly, it kind of bores me. I do like the live version however, quite a lot actually, but it's the studio version being voted on.)

3. Inferno (Another easy pick.)

4. Through the Looking Glass (Again, very tough pick for me. I happen to love Seven, but while I'm once again not too crazy about Looking Glass on the studio version (I just feel that the live version, like Church, sounds much more energetic), this time it's enough to win the round.)

I agree with all your reasoning here, especially about the live versions of Church and Glass being superior to their studio versions. However, Romeo's guitar harmonies in that extremely underrated middle section of The Turning is far more memorable to me than King Of Terrors is. I'm sure KOT will win anyway.

The only song I really like this round is Through the looking glass. That said:

The Turning - Don't like either but at least this has a pretty cool solo. To me, King of Terrors represents the initial decline of SX. first time I was disappointed by the "generic heaviness"
The Damnation Game - I like the baroque feel to it, but it's not very good.
Inferno - But god damn am I tired of that guitar intro by now.
Through the Looking Glass - no competition.

King of Terrors
Not crazy about either song - both are from the part of the Odyssey that I don't like much. But this one wins because of the spoken word section.

Church of the Machine
No contest, amazing song.

Rapture or Pain
Not fond of Inferno's nu metal/power metal mishmash feel. Rapture or Pain's alright.

Through the Looking Glass
Again, no contest. I really am not fond of Seven, either.

King of Terrors, Wicked, Walls of Babylon, Eyes of Medusa, Dressed to Kill, etc = the GOOD heavy SX

Serpent's Kiss, Children of a Faceless God, Electric Messiah, Dehumanized, etc = the not so good heavy SX

The Turning is filler.

King of Terrors
Church of the Machine
Inferno
Through the Looking Glass

Easiest round yet.

1. I find The Turning to be the very definition of a filler track, on par with some of the crap tunes from Iconoclast. King is amazing, since even though it was the most aggressive song by the band at the time, it still retained plenty of classic Symphony X qualities. The main riff and the one in the interlude are great!

2. Church is a killer song, and easily the second best from Twilight. Great theme, too. I've always found Damnation Game to be average at best.

3. No contest here. Inferno is overrated, but it's still a solid song.

4. One of the best songs of the band's career versus probably the weakest from Paradise Lost (although that bass solo is killer). No contest.

Romeo's guitar harmonies in that extremely underrated middle section of The Turning

I gave this song another listen, and the middle instrumental section is pretty much the only part of it I like.

Serpent's Kiss, Children of a Faceless God, Electric Messiah, etc = the not so good heavy SX

The Turning is filler.

Agreed.
