Symphony X Song Tournament: Vote for the Best

Accolade II — Pretty obvious choice

Frontiers — Frontiers is just ok for SX. Pharaoh is sub-par imo. They can do much better when it comes to exotics. (see Egypt, Lady of the Snow, etc)

The Raging Seasons — All things considered, both songs are on the same level to me. Musically, Raging Seasons is more melodic and deserves to win despite the production and the singer. (Love the solo on Lords of Chaos more though!)

Savage Curtain — Wow, really comparable songs. :) I like both. I don't like the chorus on either of them very much, but I like Orion's less. But my main issue with Orion is that section between the two solos. Just 1 minute of boring filler. Should have kept the song to one solo imo. On the other hand I LOVE the bridge and solo section on Savage.

.

(Even though I'm fine with Pharaoh as it is)I think if you took the verses of Pharaoh, and then used the choruses from Egypt, then have that great middle section of Pharaoh ("I feel the blood flow through my veins..") followed by Romeo's Egypt solo and Lepond's bass thumping, all going back to how Egypt crescendos and ends starting with RISE MY MINIONS, you'd have a super duper spectacular SX song.

All right, let’s have the results.

Accolade II beats Thorns of Sorrow 14-0
Frontiers beats Pharaoh 9-5
The Lords of Chaos beats The Raging Seasons 8-6
Orion- The Hunter beats Savage Curtain 13-1

Accolade II unanimously destroys Thorns of Sorrow, as expected. Pharaoh’s loss was a little sad, but I like Frontiers too. Lords of Chaos barely ekes out a victory over Raging Seasons, but its future in this tournament looks bleak. Oh, yeah, and Orion didn’t do too badly, either.

The penultimate four…

Revelation (Divus Pennae Ex Tragoedia)

Out of The Ashes

The Bird-Serpent War/Cataclysm
Vs.

My votes:

Revelation
Walls of Babylon
Evolution
Children of a Faceless God

Revelation <-frickin love this one. Probably my favorite off of PL. Not a huge fan of the out of the ashes chorus
Bird/Serpent/Cataclysm <- one of my all time favorite SX tracks
Evolution <- the song that first got me into SX
Transcendence <-because it's from V and I can't stand the chorus for children of a faceless god

Revelation
Walls of Babylon
End of Innocence
Children

1. Ashes is a solid power metal song, but Revelation is probably the most melodic track from PL and one of the band's overall more feeling-infused songs. I love pretty much everything about that song, save for a few parts of the instrumental interlude. The intro, chorus, riff under the solos, and quiet part really stand out, as does (obviously) the reference to Divine Wings at the end.

2. Babylon is one of my all-time favorite Symphony X songs, so it is clearly the winner against one of the weaker tracks from V. The intro (up until the vocals start) in Babylon is amazing, and one of the coolest things the band has done in recent years.

3. This was a tough one, but I've never been a power metal fan, and Evolution is just too musically cheesy for me. It's a solid song, but I feel that Innocence is better written. The only parts of Evolution that I really like are the verses and the main riff, whereas I like most of Innocence. Better solo section in Innocence, too.

4. This is a no-brainier, as it's another interlude against a full track. Children would win even if I didn't like it, but I do (that main riff is one of the catchiest riffs they've done in a long time). Not a big fan of the cheesy, out-of-place chorus, but still. Love the polymetric guitar/bass line in the verses, too, as it references the classic Symphony X feel that we didn't get much of on PL.

1. Revelation (Easily one of the best on PL, Out of the Ashes is good, but not quite as)

2. Walls of Babylon (Another great track from PL. Bird/Serpent is great when listening to the full album, but is weaker on it's own.)

3. Evolution (First SX song I ever heard, and it's fucking phenomenal. Fantastic guitar and keyboard work, great vocals, a chorus you can't help but sing along to, etc. I love Power Metal, so this one is right up my alley.)

4. Transcendence (Children of a Faceless God is just the Serpents Kiss 2.0, and I'm just not a big fan of it. Also, anyone notice how the vocal melody in the bridge right before the guitar solo (the "ahhhhhAHHHHahhhh, all I have I give to you!") sounds exactly like the female vocals in the very beginning of Walls of Babylon? Also, Transcendence was the portion of V that made me stand up out of my chair, and seriously pay attention to the album.)

Revelation(Ashes approaches cheese a bit too much for my liking)
Walls Of Babylon(sick opening)
Evolution
Transcendence(the chorus to Faceless God is indeed godawful; and the fact that this is Russ' fave track off of IC does not bode well for the future)

Revelation-one of my favorites
Walls of Babylon
Evolution
Transcendence- is there anything better than this that could lead into communion? The answer is no.

Revelation - by a mile
Bird & Serpent War/Cataclysm - Walls is uneven as a song.
End of Innocence - both songs are ok
Children of a Faceless God - THANKS TO the chorus
