syqem - the exterminating angel (for fans of tool, porcupine tree etc)

This shit is legit as hell! Really loving the song and writing, and the production is damned good as is! Maybe reamp with a real amp, but otherwise it's all sounding really good. I love the vocal layers and effects... fucking genius!

Indeed, this shit is "legit as hell" :D Reminds me a lot of Bulb's OMNOM thing, as much in the production (very good but programmed-sounding drums and djenty digital guitars) as the music, pretty cool! Not getting too much of a Tool/PT vibe though ;) (more like Underoath and those experimental indie/alt-rock bands, none of which I know enough to name - I don't mean that in a bad way though!)

Oh man, it's very difficult to give advice without making it sound like criticism, and it's not, BUT I'd try to do them guitars through the Herbert. There's something "3D" about a miked cab that'll give it more depth. IMHO.

THIS...from our resident AxeFX crusader? Surely not... :goggly: :D

This song is so damn good! Danny. I am one of the vocalists for March Hare, and I have to say that I feel a pretty strong connection with you on vocal style. I mean your voice eclipses mine in every way, but as far as not going the standard metalcore scream-verse/sing-chorus vibe. I love the fact that you are using the 8-string, but you don't just anchor on the lower register. And the guitar tone is secong to none. Every note tears through. The production is great and the instrumentation is flawless................I'm basically putting my tongue in your arse. Splat showed me your stuff about 3 hours ago and it haunts me every second. Get the album out soon. Please?

Hahaha, fuck you, man!

You should try the AFX through the Mesa Poweramp. I guarantee that after a short while you would try to tweak the wrong gear. I did it with the Blackstar HT-5, I did it with the KranK Rev+, and I've done it with a 5150. ;)

The only thing i can pinpoint that's different is the very first transient, when the pick hits a string. You get "sucker punch" that's not there yet. Maybe in 7.1 ;)

again - i'm honoured you guys like this!

sorry, to repeat myself : but thanks for all the kind words! :notworthy

it helps me / us to gain confidence in what we do, as we are
very critical...

It sounds "pro". The drums sound very realistic.
/Jocke

thanks! its always great to have adrummer play the stuff,
although its an edrum. actually i'm pretty overfed by programmed drums,
to be honest.

thanks! nice to hear that from you!

i know some people use 8 string to play ver very low... which is good.
but thats not all you can do with this beautiful thing.

we have some new songs that have lots of clean tapping stuff,
which i could never do on a 6 string. i totally love the range of this instrument.

i basically only know 2 singers in my area, who actually do sing with their "real" voices. with all other bands, most of the times, its screaming. screaming. then there is a chorus, they sing. then screaming...

i love screaming. jens kidman has so much emotion in his voice (thats what i feel). but i never really felt as connected to those songs as to maynards from tool or gavins from dredg or even steven wilsons approach.

with vocal style : i try an in between approach.
in some parts i feel that another texture is needed, where singing isnt enough, still i want to keep my screaming as close to my singing voice as possible, dont want this to sound like 2 different persons (most of the times..)

yes, there is some great music out there. but it is destroyed by vocalists only making "noise" instead of putting a message or a feel out there.

album will be out end of the year, but i promise, i will use this forum exclusively to upload new demos of our songs! as soon as i have them ready!

I listened to this about 15 times, and I must say that it is very, very good! Right up my alley really. I tried to find something I didn't like about the mix, and there were only two:
-I think it pumps a little bit too much, but I must admit that I only heard that when I checked with headphones.
-The cymbals could be a bit louder, they get buried a bit.

Definately a fan of how you used the 8-string too!

could you allow the songs to be downloaded on soundclick so I could download them and listen through winamp?

what mic did you use for the vocals? any info on the bass?

This is really, really good. Reminds me of Pulse Ultra, hope that's not a slam, I always loved that effect on the guitar. And the ethereal parts are right up my alley. I love when shit just swells up into a big floaty part. And the poly part fits well, it's not as Meshuggah-y as described. As soon as everyone got a chance to program their own drums, it became a Meshuggah rip-off fest. But this stuff, and Splatt's stuff, is fabulous. I really want to bridge the gap of this kind of music, and the horse-shit I write.

:-D Meshuggah Rip off fest :-D !
this will be the title of our next song, love that one! :-D

about the too compressed thing:
i have to check that in my car and on headphones.
i feel that the cymbals may even be lowered in volume...

Alright guys, let me say thank you for the nice words
and give you the link to a downloadable version.
i will sometime soon upload higher bitrate, if anyone wants me to.

Why you son of a-! Oddly enough, I have a song called "Deadstar", the irony is delicious.
But, I'll give a starting point on how to achieve my sound... Take everything good you've heard from this thread, and just do the opposite. Violia' instant Element!

muse made a song called "deadstar" too, which isn't really a song i like but i like the name.. gotta check yours

^bass was my brother thomas and his warwick corvette 5 string
bubinga wood.

I used one clean channel for the low lows, with lots of compression for sustain, and 1 high gain channel with gearbox / big bottom, to give the bass more grid.
we think of the bass as a third guitar so we go for a more distorted sound so the bass eats up some space in the mix.
also i boost 100 Hz on Bass, i leave the sub more for the kick.
