Ex. 1 - Sparking the Blaze
Play this evenly, with strict alt picking and stay on time by use of a metronome
This is Alexi's warm-up--- His favorite, which he got from Paul Gilbert. This is a descending A Aeolian/Natural Minor pattern. 90-120 BPM

Ex.2 - Sparking the Blaze
As Alexi begins to get warmed up, he begins to do a tapping lick, based on the Pentatonic Minor, which is then bluesified by bending and releasing the tapped note. 96BPM

Ex. 3 - Sparking the Blaze
Mr. Latvala, conscious probably of his aging legs, decides to ride a pimped out streetbike around the venues. "I don't have any warm-up exercises. I just play whatever comes to mind. Actually, sometimes I'll warm up on a little Bach or something. It really gets me focused," says Latvala. This is the opening to Musette in D Major from Bach's Notebook II for Anna Magdalena. You can finger pick this or hybrid pick (pluctrem and fingers.) This is played in Dropped D down one who step.

Ex. 4 - Sweeping Up the Ante
Laiho begins to test-fire a sweep picking lick in D Major. Make this sound somewhat like a flute.

Ex. 6 - "Sweeping" Up the Ante
Latvala, as if in a duel, decides to see Alexi his Sweeping and Tapping and raise him a dose of legato. This is an evil sounding D minor phrase that sounds swept, but isn't actually sounded by the plectrum. It is, however completely slurred, including the first note.

Ex. 8 - "Sweeping" Up the Ante
Same as example 7, but the tapped notes move chromatically. To save space and time, im just gonna put the order of the tapped notes, you can plug em into the above lick.

Laiho, being the wizard of sweeping that he is, busts out with a similar lick to the one starting at 3:50 on Living Dead Beat.

Ex. 10, 11, 12 - Pent-Up Rage
Latvala closes our lesson with his interesting take on the Pentatonic Minor box. He prefers three note per string Pentatonic minor boxes, because he likes the sound of two notes of different strings sounding the same note. Heres what he does.

Ex. 13, 14, 15
Examples 13 and 14 are basically Ex. 10 and Ex. 11 with the D root moved from 5th fret A to 10th fret E. Ex. 15 is showing you how to extend the Pentatonic 3 note scale above to a 4 note, and if you can double finger tap, you could include all 5 notes of the Pentatonic Minor scale. You could also take this lick, expand on it by a few notes, and do single stringed "sweep arpeggios".
