Tasteful Shredding

Necrophagist circa-Onset Of Putrefaction is quite tasteful I think...

I agree. The solos on that album are very refined & polished. I never heard the original, but the production on the remaster is probably the best Death Metal production I've ever heard.

I could have named many more non-metal guys, but I thought this was thread was about tasty Metal shredders.

OK we all know about groups who go overboard with guitar wankery and Malmsteenisms essentially ruining whatever songwriting a particular album may have (some examples that come to mind are Necrophagist and Children of Bodom).
Just hold on a sec. Necrophagist and CoB's solo's aren't tasteful? Have you even listened to songs like Stabwound, or Follow the Reaper?

Those two are one of the last shredders I would've picked for "least tasteful".

That I would consider the opposite of tasteful, there's not much purpose for 90 seconds of sweeps in a five minute song other than to say "look how well I can sweep pick!"

 The only appeal "Follow the Reaper" has is its ridiculously over the top keyboard shred solo that is so gaudy it's almost painful. Listening to that song is like eating a bowl of icing sugar.

I have both Cacophony albums. Their first album, Speed Metal Symphony is nothing short of amazing, while Go Off! is pretty decent as well.

I've heard plenty of music by those groups... non-stop wankery with no content.

Wow, Suicmez & even Laiho are great players. I guess some people just don't like memorable guitar solos, probably because some folks don't find them rewarding, which I could understand. I've heard a lot of the guys being mentioned, but I think those guys have memorable leads compared to a lot of people. I'm a guitarist, therefore I'm into guitarists & I excluded a lot of guys from my list but they made the list. Suicmez can build a song up into a great solo & Laiho has a style unlike your dime-a-dozen Power Metal guitarists (I'm not calling Bodom Power Metal...). Those guys have "content" in their playing if that's what you want to call it & they're not necessarily generic respectively. It's hard not to be at least a bit generic as a Metal guitarist though. If you want to hear shredder's with terrible phrasing listen to Rusty Cooley, Theodore Ziras, or Francesco Fareri...

That fucking camel jockey from Necrophagist DOES NOT write memorable solos, nor is his playing style in any way interesting. He's exactly the kind of faggot that gives good shredders a bad name.

Yeah, that must be it. I wanted to come up with some kind of insult here but I'll never top this classic:

nor are you the worst poster i've ever come across however that does not mean that i dont want to put you in front of a firing squad and scream at the top of my voice SHOOT THAT FUCKER DOWN and look on as you spend your last blood-bubbling breaths voicing your insignificant and frankly incorrect opinions about metal the universe and everything until eventually your words become entirely senseless babbling cut off by a silence so relieving it inspires in me a celebratory urination on your miserable excuse for a corpse and so i reiterate; lol nevermore

seriously it's like non stop sweep picking and tapping... ugh... write a fucking riff!

If you want to hear some good technical guitar playing with melody, I reccomend Chet Atkins or Les Paul back in their hayday.

YES

Thoth: Muhammed writes tons of catchy riffs, and his solos are played extremely cleanly and proficiently, unlike sloppy sounding fuzzy shit like other shredders.

yes he can play the content is so vapid... it sounds like technicality for technicalitiy's sake. Lars Johansen is a guy on the other hand who can shred his ass off and write completely memorable leads that compliment the song without going overboard.
