And I agree with Joey, best producer is Mutt Lange, or maybe Bob Ezrin.

The "best" album is a tough one. What do you gauge it on? For sheer sonic production, soundgarden's superunknown has to be up there, or the black album, or any of the Steve Lillywhite produced dave mathews band records.

.... and "Restless and Wild" album from ACCEPT is probably the best production achievement ever... fuck... it was 1982!

In a previous thread back several months, I noted that three great metal albums came out in 1982 - Judas Priest "Screaming for Vengeance", Iron Maiden "Number of the Beast", and Accept "Restless and Wild". Considering how popular the first two were/are, I have no doubt in my mind that the cream of that crop was 'Restless and Wild"; it was easily better that the two other legendary albums - I wore that slab of vinyl out. Great album.

Painkiller - Execution Ground is pretty fucking amazing sounding. Best production Painkiller ever had. I'd be inclined to say it was Bill Laswell that recorded and mixed it but I dunno, doesn't feel like it has his signature sound, but it's gorgeous either way.
Gorguts - From Wisdom To Hate and Obscura both sound amazing.
Cryptopsy - Once Was Not
Converge - Jane Doe
Bloodbath - The Fathomless Mastery sounds noooooyce
Dave Otero did a fucking GODLY on the last 2 Cephalic Carnage albums too. Muchos respect for the Xenosapien snare sound. Anomalies has an incredible bass tone as well, one of my favourite ever

Production-wise any song off the latest nickelback album is just outstanding. I can't get over how good that record sounds. Performances are great, it's mixed so efficiently, and it's super loud yet sounds super clean and still feels dynamic... the vocals are so loud but at the same time never feel that way. it's amazing. if you want to learn how to mix a song for radio, buy this album and listen to it 100 times

Basically the AEnema album is an absolute masterpiece, songwriting wise, as well as production wise. Probably the best sounding album I've ever heard.

aenima is an amazing album...probably my fav. of all time, by any artist

BUT...i would say the production on lateralus is even better - it's just pure, 100% sonic perfection

I honestly never liked the guitar tone on Lateralus, too nasally IMO; the drums sound pretty damn good, but the kick is a bit thin; overall the mix is cool and organic, and has great air, but I've never thought it was all that fantastic cuz those elements always kinda stuck out to me as things I wasn't that crazy about

Actually, yeah, besides the kick, the rest of the drums (and overheads) are really fantastic (I just don't like the apparent 2k boost on the kick, that's such a fatiguing frequency overall to me, so I'm kinda sensitive to it)

yea i'd agree the guitar tone is a little funky, but i guess that would be a matter of preference - it's not like it sounds the way it does due to some limitation in the production, i think that's what adam jones just wants to sound like!

Anything from CLA (Story of the Year, Greenday, Paramore), ANDY WALLACE (sevendust, Linkin Park) OR FORRESTER SAVELL (Karnivol), don't really like all the bands listed, but mixes are perfect. Forrester Savell is one of our big guns over here in AUS!!!!

I love everything about that album ASIDE from the snare sound. I loved the snare on Riot!

It is so artificial It sticks out of the mix like a sore thumb. All they had to do was pick a sample with a bit more low mids and less high, lower it a dB, and that album would be sonically perfect.

Andy Wallace would get my vote as the best ever too.
Not metal, but Grace by Jeff Buckley is still one of the most incredible sounding records in the rock world thanks to Andy Wallace's ears
