The death of the internet forum

Are we possibly experiencing a broader phenomenon? The emerging adulthood of the internet?

Exactly re:disorganization. Threads, along with basic formatting/word processing options are critical for conversation past "omglikehowcool".

I think you just found your own refutation of the claim that the Internet is becoming more mature. You're mapping your own 'adulthood' onto it when in fact it is becoming too fast-paced and graphically oriented to be able to sustain sophisticated civil discourse nearly as much.

People much prefer the rapid fire thread format of FB, in which they find it much easier to fire their one-off opinions and be validated by the number of likes their comments get, making it much less likely they will respond to others' posts in a rational manner.

Different phyles. The internet is maturing in that there are a infinitely more venues competing for the same subsets and offering similar services, albeit more tailored to further subniches in consumer preference. Like people who want discussion vs people who just want lists of new album releases, with listener rankings, etc.

Separately, the sort of person who populates and spends much time on FB is the same person who had little to mostly troll usage of forums to begin with.

Without a doubt, the like button ruins all hopes of intelligent conversation. Though it serves well when there isn't much else to say other than a "thumbs up".

(If this were Facebook, I would have "liked" your post.)

prefer messageboard/forum style over facebook

trying to hold conversations on facebook is annoying to the point that now i use my facebook account mostly just to look at softcore porn

The most annoying thing about Facebook has to be those people who abuse the "share" button and do nothing but share pictures all day, thus blowing up all their friends' news feeds with their useless crap - which are usually nothing but the photo equivalent of obnoxious chain letters/e-mails (which I've never understood the point of anyway, like why does anyone respond to those? Some people...)

I try and use Facebook as a easy means to express my thoughts to nobody in particular, where I mainly talk about whatever I've been reading/watching/listening to. It is a great way to keep in touch with friends as well, and is probably the best tool (aside from e-mail and maybe AIM) to converse with friends.

The thing that annoys me about Facebook is that people take it so damn seriously, and they make themselves out to be bigger than what they are. I like goofy nonsensical shit, but Facebook is super serious biz for way too many. I like forums because you can be goofy and it generally allows for more freedom.

This is like half of all the posts that get made in social now. Just check the news thread any given day... it's really something!

You all have valid points. I really think Facebook is such a self-promotional thing where you aren't allowed to just goof off or whatever. Or at least that's the way most people use it. And so many people you're "friends" with see everything, because... you know, you gotta have at least 500 friends to be considered "normal". Kids these days...

I use Facebook to chat with chicks that I can't fuck and to get disrespected by Dodens Grav. This forum doesn't work for me as a tool to discover new bands anymore, actually NWN boards fit my tastes better but people there are idiots and I'm just not used to it.

EDIT: The classical thread here is cool but it needs some Thoth-Amon up that mother.

yeah
facebook is kinda weird now
used to look like myspace, but now it looks more like twitter

Interesting thread read. Turn off your tl;dr filters.... :)

I do see traffic down on the site, some of it due to Summer time, some due to the fact that a lot of the users who were once teenaged/young adults are now done with school, in the real world, have kids, etc. There are definitely many factors, even along with the "taking a break for a while" thing. There have been forums I have lived on that I take long breaks from, then come back and repeat. It's natural.

Now, that all said, I'd love to get your alls feedback on some things I'm working on. I'd prefer your trust in not repeating it outside of this thread if possible (not that it is all that super duper secret but the less that know the less headaches I deal with).

I haven't given up on the forum concept at all. Still love it and see it has a "main stay". However, it does need to "get smarter" (more functional/modern?).

1) I'll soon be moving UM over to new software. Vbulletin was bought out a couple years ago by a bunch of lame ass money grubbers who care more about money/stockholders than quality of software writing/performance/employees. All the original guys are gone. That's why I have not upgraded in forever. But, some of the original guys formed another forum company called xenForo and it's finally maturing to the point I am ready to move UM over to it. You can get a feel for it at http://xenforo.com/community/ (mind you that's the default theme). I know there will be a few growing pains on getting used to slight differences but all in all it's much nicer, runs smooth, modern, better functionality, etc. I think it will be a good move (thoughts?).

2) I am working on a bunch of other forums, and the bonus if all goes as planned, is you will be able to use a single sign-on across all the sites without having to go through the full registration process over and over. Some of the other sites I'll be building cover topics such as: movies in general, a horror specific site (love my horror!), other genres of music (some metal specific such a doom, death, djent), tv shows, sports - you get the idea. One can argue "we can talk about all that stuff here already" - but, with new standalone sites comes new people, new topics, more porting, more to participate in in general. Some will love the idea of new sites to visit, some won't, and that's cool. All will mostly use the Ultimate_____.com brand.

3) If you have a desire to contribute content about any of these subjects - each site (including UM) will have full on proper front end content sites to go with them. I know there are some dudes/dudettes here who love to write about stuff they're passionate about so there's an opportunity to do that. Some of you already write for others sites but if you are not exclusive to those places you are more than welcome to contribute on some of my sites as well. Just hit me up in private if anyone is interested.

4) Feedback! I seem to struggle getting good feedback from people. Complaints are never a problem (hah!) but I'd love to hear features, idea, things you'd like to see, things you do indeed hate about this site or other forums. I don't build/run all this stuff just for myself - I love building/maintaining places (sorry mono, no Ultimate porn/erotic sites in the works) where people can come and hang out with like-minded folks.

There's a ton of work to be done, but I am going full steam ahead on it all before I get too old to give a shit any more! :) Thoughts, hate mail, feedback?

The XenForo interface looks cool and not very different. The vBulletin guys sold their whole brand and made another just like the first one? Will this forum and its history be compatible and will it just be transferred onto the new software or will UltimateMetal forum start from zero? When will this change happen approximately?

As for myself I have to say I will gladly visit the movie site and perhaps some others too. All in all I trust your judgement, go for it!
