Don't get me wrong guys, but this forum lost it's reason to be way back when JayKeeley killed the website.

There's truth to this for sure, but I felt it was still strong for awhile after that point.

Agreed, we're very much on the same page here.

Claiming 'shell of it's previous self' is just annoying, because it's been practically more time after the site's been killed than time with it being active.

I hear what you're saying, but its previous self was still the forum we were introduced to and grew to know and love, regardless of the amount of time that has passed since it's metamorphisized. Not sure how that opinion would annoy you, but have at it.

The web site was great, and maybe JK will eventually decide to revive it. That said, I still discover a good deal of music here. In the last 12 months, I've discovered the following because of RC:

Amesoeurs
Dark Forest
Destroyer 666
Gwynbleidd
Klabautamann
Mgla
Raventale
Secrets of the Moon
Slumber
Stinking Lizaveta
Wolves in the Throne Room

And I'm sure I'm missing a few.

What Bathory is to Zod, DsO are to me. I simply do not understand what is so special about this band. Perhaps is something I'm just not "getting". Or perhaps, I've "got" it, but it's the fans that don't get it.

Let me make it clear, I do not think they suck, per se, just MASSIVELY overhyped, especially when other bands are releasing far superior works. Then again, I never did get into the whole artsy type of black metal thing (also see Blut Aus Nord) other than Fleurety's first album. DsO are clearly very good at playing black metal, but it's just not my type of BM, I guess. I do find their previous band very rewarding, however, which is why I keep trying with DsO.

I've only been able to hear it once, but I recently bought the DsO/Moonblood split. The DsO songs are quite good. Granted they stick to what I like for the most part, which can be called "blast beat blarghu" sometimes. The Moonblood songs were a big surprise, in the good way.

Maybe I should be more concise, when I say "they suck". I'm sure they're accomplishing exactly what they're setting out to accomplish. And they're clearly skilled musicians. Even though it often sounds like the drummer has drunkenly fallen face first into his kit, if they can reproduce that sound consistently, than clearly it's what they're after. However, when all is said and done, all music is about the songs, or viewed through a wider lens, the CD as a complete work. And to that end, DsO fail miserably.

I don't see how the existence of a separate site would dictate the nature of what gets discussed around here. Surely that is ONLY to do with the people who post here.

Perhaps I shouldn't permit spam threads? What do you think? The fact that we have a "say anything you like thread" should be enough to keep non-music threads at bay, no?

To me, not wanting to discuss music just tells me that music isn't as important as it once was. Again, reflected by those who used to post here vs those who currently post here.

Also, useless posts such as single emoticons, a "lol", or one "." response doesn't make much sense to me either considering how much time those oompas spend on the forum. Either engage fully or not at all.

If you are obsessive-compulsive about music then that will be applauded here forever and a day!

Eh, generally I come to RC for entertainment, and not necessarily to discuss music. I recommend stuff occasionally (Oakhelm, Helcaraxe, etc.) that I feel warrants some attention, but otherwise, I like the unpredictable nature of RC's threads.

Again, I don't see anything wrong with posts that are an emoticon or dot. Sometimes it's simply a kudos to someone for saying something funny, poignant, or both.

Were you around these parts when the forum generated mostly musical discussion? If not, I suppose it would be difficult to understand how special this place used to be in our eyes.

Agreed - I use those types of replies fairly frequently to give props, enhance and emphasize reactions to different types of posts, etc.

Of course!! But I'm talking about folks who ONLY do this and nothing else. :tickled: It doesn't bother me as such, it just makes me think why bother? If you're THAT bored and can only muster up the existence to eavesdrop or chime in with a random "agree" or "disagree" then it makes me wonder just how much time people have on their hands!!!

Do people really just come to internet forums to read OTHER people's conversations, without wanting to engage fully? How voyeuristic. :loco:

I'm back, after quitting RC for an hour.

In regards to the current state of RC... I for one am turned off by making music oriented threads as the majority of them receive 18 views, 3 replies, and are quickly swept under the rug of bullshit that pre-occupies this forum's front page. So when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

I actually enjoyed DsO up until this recent release. I havent heard Kenose though. This new cd is just noise and makes no sense to me at all until the little ambient parts come in. lol It's, simply put, not an enjoyable listening experience.

I can admit that their latest disc made some sense to me at first and I hastily told myself I liked it, but the last time I heard it it was just a mish-mash of sounds.

I actually missed you.

I don't disagree. We've had "off line" discussions about this and I think this became obvious with the recommendation threads. Even those barely get any response or discussion, so perhaps it has less to do with the forum but just that people in general are a little more....apathetic these days.

Perhaps the novelty of heavy metal is wearing off on some! :loco: Which, by the way, is perfectly natural. Not everyone sticks with metal all their life, there is definitely a phasing out for most. This typically occurs when puberty is a memory and getting laid is a recurring Friday night event.

Perhaps RC is on the verge of seeing the next generation. All poseurs step aside. :loco:

I think it's a byproduct of overconsumption. Too many albums, not enough time. I wouldn't need another source for finding music than this forum, yet I still subscribe to 3 metal magazines and check reviews sites to find more music to, I hate to say it...consume.

I haven't even given the last couple of Maiden albums 10 spins each so far, and 15 years ago, all the metal I owned was Maiden. The first 50 vinyls I bought were Maiden stuff.
