The "Epic" Metal Debate Thread

I just realized that everyone who's posted in this thread is a gigantic faggot.
Let me fix the problem.
BAL-FUCKING-SAGOTH
There. That's better.

Length isn't necessarily important. In my eyes it's the overall feeling of the song. I usually associate the word with an atmosphere that conjures a sense of triumph and grandeur. A fine example is Zemial's 'I TAN I EPI TAS' which is about the battle of Thermopylae and lasts a meager three and a half minutes. Despite it's length, it's surely the very definition of epic music.

A few others that come to mind:

Absurd - Germanien uber Alles
Aeternus - Ild Dans
Aeternus - Blodsverging
Bathory - Home of Once Brave
Bathory - Through Blood By Thunder
Candlemass - A Sorcerer's Pledge
Falkenbach - Heathenpride
Graveland - Thousand Swords (the entire album)
Graveland - Thurisaz
Graveland - White Beasts of Wotan
Morrigan - Where Angels Keep Silence
Scald - Night Sky
Zemial - In Monumentum

I agree. Length can add to the quality, but epic songs don't need to be long.

Bathory - Through Blood By Thunder
Candlemass - A Sorcerer's Pledge

Ace. That's one of my favorite Candlemass tunes. Both are definitely mad epic.

For me "epic" describes a song that leaves a deep impact on me. Sometimes the song is very long, but then other times it an be just normal length. I generally find power metal to produce most of the songs that I find "epic", but not all the time.
Some of my personal choices:
"The Keeper of the Seven Keys" - Helloween
"Iron" - Ensiferum
"Majesty" - Gamma Ray

Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time (the entire album)

This album is the embodiment of the word 'epic' from start to finish. The best Iron Maiden album

Epic for me is when the melodies and such reach this point where I can just feel the music, and it gives me this indescribable feeling of joy and majesty. For me, that often coincides with the whole Power-Metalish symphony, or the atmosphere in Black Metal. I don't usually call Thrash epic, but rather crushing or some equally cool descriptor.

Also, a little off-topic, what are some of your favorite words to describe great music?

Edit: Also, to clarify the Thrash thing a little, when I listen to Thrash I just feel this intoxicating feeling of power and righteous anger.

Hmm, I would consider most Opeth songs epic, the whole My Arms Your Hearse album in particular, cause of the "chill" feeling I get. Some other epic songs:
Borknagar- Inherit the Earth
Symphony X- Set the World on Fire
Nile- Unas Slayer of the Gods
Vital Remains- Dawn of the Apocalypse
Immortal- Mountains of Might
Gorgoroth- Sign of an Open Eye, such cold atmosphere in this song
Dark Forest- the whole Aurora Borealis album
Emperor- fuck, Emperor has a lot of epic stuff
Akercocke- My Apterous Angel
Cradle of Filth- The Forest Whispers My Name

Stormlord - Mare Nostrum
Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno
Emperor - I am the Black Wizards
Opeth - The Moor

Also, Wintersun is pretty epic imo.. the whole album.

Tyr - Ragnarok
Therion - Gothic Kabbalah
Symphony X - The Odyssey (the song), The Divine Wings of Tragedy (the song)
Most of Dream Theater's good stuff

I don't think of Death/Black/Thrash metal as "epic" although there is some great stuff there that gives me goosebumps.

Tales From the Thousand Lakes is epic as well. Amorphis have lost their epic quality for me in recent albums. I still love them, but they're definitely not as epic as they used to be.
