The Football Thread!

Joe, I find it outright hilarious that you're getting confused by this system, seeing as you're coming from a country that highlights things as conferences, play-offs, draft systems and just Baseball in general! :D

The national teams in football consist of the (arguably) best players of a country (picked by the coach of the national team). But these players are usually employed in clubs around the world.

It's the same as with Basketball, Ice Hockey etc.

Hahaha hey now!

To be honest dude, I've never, ever attempted to research the "leagues" and how they are structured. All I know about the sport is hearing of the various club names, national teams, how this club hates the other club, etc. etc. That's the only source of the confusion - I have never dove in head first to break it all down.

Thanks for doing so for me...:)

You also have to know that I haven't played sports since I was a little kid, so the same stuff that makes no sense to you makes less to me, haha.

I love my country, but we do have some retarded concepts (non-political...;-)

The simple things:

-Why do we park in driveways, but drive on parkways?
-Why do hot dogs come in packages of 10, but the buns packages of 8?

-Joe

Oh and Slash, your system is definitely way more confusing. It must be the American in me, but let me try to break down my confusion...

-You have the FIFA, which are the international governing body of football, got it.
-The UEFA which are the European governing body of football, got it.

But what is your one, be-all, end-all, all stakes on the table competition tournament within Europe only??

You seem to have a multitude of different clubs within one country. (it's hard for me to refer to the different "clubs" within one European country, since I refer to the states in my country, some of which rival the size of countries in Europe!!)

These clubs, as I understand, compete in various tournaments outside of the normal football season throughout the year, which don't have much to do with the regular season of organized play.

Oy vey...I think you see what I'm getting at Slash. Educate me...mmmkay?

-Joe

P.S. - I'm notorious for overthinking things...;-)

Ok I think I've narrowed down my confusion hahaha!

Trying to differentiate between National teams and clubs, and how they qualify for specific cups, tournaments, etc. such as Europa and Championship League.

This also does confuse me like hell, dude. Better just laying back, drink some beer and watch a good match. Let´s keep it primitive  But you´re right..this Uefa and Fifa shit annoys me. One other thing that annoys me to death are the immensely money sums the players cost. They soon will overstep the 100 million line, I´m sure. That´s pretty sick!!

Oh yeah dude! Look at baseball salaries too...Ming boggling!

It´s not that hard.

Each country has a bunch of clubs/teams (formed by people from various places in the world) that compete between themselves on their national tournament every year (example: Bundesliga on Germany).

The best teams on each of these tournaments are qualified to play a bigger tournament in the next year with the best teams from every country in the continent (example: UEFA Champions League on Europe).

The best team on each of these continental tournaments competes on the Fifa Club World Cup.

These tournaments happens every year (so technically a team can win all these tournaments in a single year).

On the national tournaments there are usually more than one division, to separate the best teams from the country. The best teams on the first division goes to the continental tournament, as the best teams on the second division goes to the first division on the next year's tournament. Some tournaments have so many teams that they need more than four divisions. In some bigger countries there are also more regional tournaments than the national (example: Campeonato Paulista) that doesn´t qualifies for anything, and are usually good to warm up the squads on the beggining of the year.

...AND.... every four years we have the Fifa World Cup, on which every country sends a team with their best players (doesn´t matter if they play on other countries clubs) to compete between each other in the most glorious thing you'll ever see on TV : )

...i can't wait for the football season to start this year

hopefully my 49ers will be able to find their way into the playoffs for the 1st time in fucking forever

Ah yeah that makes perfect sense...Thanks for breaking it down for a dumbass like me...:)

Let me just say how funny it is to see fans in Pyongyang, North Korea sitting as still as statues during a match lol. Funny, yet pretty sad at the same time!

Perez didn't learn his lesson the first time around and he's making the same mistakes over again: You can have the best midfield in the world, but you won't win shit, if your defense is utter crap.

Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, with Barca having won the CL this year and a team like Wolfsburg winning the Bundesliga. But it's very hard to sustain success in this sport with a lacking defense.

It will be interesting to see, what the huge Ronaldo move will bring for the rest of Europe's elite. ManU is most likely looking for a Ronaldo "replacement" already and chances are, they'll find it in Ribery. And with the 94 million cash injection under their belt they'll surely be in a position to make a veeeery tempting offer for Ribery.

And this could bring Bayern in a position to make the Sneijder and/or Robben move...

Bayern announced today that they are finished with their shopping spree and Perez said he respects Bayern's decision for not letting Ribery go.

I don't believe a word. This carousel is still spinning!

+100000

I agree to 100% you´re damn right, bro. Hoeneß said.."Bayern will become weak, if the 60 Mio line will be overstepped!"

The next days will be thrilling for German Ribéry fans :erk: Fucking STAY!

So I thought about bumping this thread about the divine game several times over the last few months, but now it's a horrible event that actually makes me do it:

I just read that Robert Enke, 32, our national goalie and goalie of Bundesliga team Hannover 96 has committed suicide! I'm genuinely shocked right now... Robert was one of the most down to earth guys you could ever meet and he was one of the best currently active goalkeepers. He threw himself on a railway at a crossing.... This comes totally out of the blue.

He's survived by his wife and his eight month old daughter.

I´m shocked as well, dude :(

He was a good man! To be honest, I´ve never been a fan of Hannover 96, but this really shocked me. Suicide?! I know, he lost his children and he had some serious health problems.

I respected him as a keeper of the German football team.
