The Friday Five

Well, that's a very demanding question actually, as it's the same here as asking: "What's wrong with education?"
Briefly though, I've always considered myself as a self-educated person who has been able to see how fucked up the whole education system is, thus hates to have to literally waste endless hours in classes that 1) Would contribute with nothing to what I already know, 99% (if not all) of the time. 2) I can learn MUCH more from anyway by sitting at home exploring and analyzing good literature.
For such reasons, I am quite famous in my class and university in general for my outrageously non-frequent attendance. Which, of course, is not conceived as a "good student's" trait.
Also, with its being the third language, the level of English pedagogy in my country is next to pathetic that I often find myself in a situation where I'm literally correcting my teachers mistakes, which makes me an 'ass' kind of student in their eyes and therefore a "not good" one. :)
etc. etc.
As far as I'm concerned, the only reason I'm still a student is that I need to have a degree and get a job; probably becoming a university teacher as I envision. Well... a better one I hope.

Why would you not want to be a good student?

This applies to my #5 as well: I think I am an adept learner, but a good student, ie. one who applies himself liberally to assignments in order to get high marks, I am not. The difference is the former has to do with actual study and the latter effort. Given the stupidity of most assignments, I consider the effort often best used elsewhere.

1. Are you going to school this fall? If not, what was the most recent year of school you completed?
Took a semester off but I intend to go back for the spring.

2. If yes, what kind of schooling are you doing (high school, undergraduate, graduate, etc.)?
Undergraduate

3. Are you someone who enjoys/enjoyed going back to school?
Sometimes

4. Do/did you like back-to-school shopping? Why or why not?
I like shopping for office supplies in general regardless of the occasion.

5. Are/were you a good student?
Ugh, I'm the worst student on the planet. I only apply myself when it comes to things I like, and when it comes to subjects I hate I'm super lazy.

Bingo! ;)

I hear ya. I was a teacher for 2 years and, quite frankly, the education system in Britain is largely a crock of shite. It's more about creating political capital than giving the kids a useful education and encouraging a love of learning. I went in an idealist and came out very disappointed. So I got the righteous fuck out of it and now work in engineering.

1. Are you going to school this fall? If not, what was the most recent year of school you completed?

Yeah, I'm going to school, Actually, school has already started here, I guess it's good. I hated to go back again, but it can be fun. Though, in a while it will get fucking boring, I can already feel that time approaching...

2. If yes, what kind of schooling are you doing (high school, undergraduate, graduate, etc.)?

High School, man. High School.

3. Are you someone who enjoys/enjoyed going back to school?

It has it's fun moments, and it's bad/annoying/fucked up moments. In general, when hanging with friends, it's fun!

4. Do/did you like back-to-school shopping? Why or why not?

Nah, it's just annoying. The reason is pretty damn simple, too. I'm too fucking lazy.

5. Are/were you a good student?

If I try my best, yeah, sure. I can be a total pain in the ass though, it depends in which mood I am. I would say I'm a good student in general.

Awesome idea for a thread!

1. Are you going to school this fall? If not, what was the most recent year of school you completed?
No, I am not. I graduated from High School this past June and I am taking the fall semester off to finally have some time to myself. I will be starting to college in 2009.
2. If yes, what kind of schooling are you doing (high school, undergraduate, graduate, etc.)?
I am going to be going to school to get an Associates Degree in Digital Audio Production.
3. Are you someone who enjoys/enjoyed going back to school?
I always enjoy being freed of boredom and being given more of a purpose, but I'm not going to lie, it's a pain in the ass.
4. Do/did you like back-to-school shopping? Why or why not?
No. I knock it out in as much time as possible, only getting the bare essentials.
5. Are/were you a good student?
I have long-been the epitome of the "if only you would apply yourself" case. I've been told by teachers I am easily smart enough to have taken advanced placement courses throughout high school, but due to my total lack of work ethic and disinterest in school in general I took standard courses and got mediocre grades. If I had put more into it, I would've gotten a lot more out of it.

Back to school..

3. Yes I am.
4. Yes. Because I bought CDs&DVDs worth of 160 euros. I need them to compensate for the stress from studying.
5. I get good grades easily but I'm not very "studious."

1. Are you going to school this fall? If not, what was the most recent year of school you completed?

Yes

2. If yes, what kind of schooling are you doing (high school, undergraduate, graduate, etc.)?

Transferring as an undergrad

3. Are you someone who enjoys/enjoyed going back to school?

Usually yes because I get to see some people that I haven't seen for a little while, now I'm nervous because I won't know anyone

4. Do/did you like back-to-school shopping? Why or why not?

No. I hate shopping. This year I actually need to go clothes shopping for the first time in years and I don't like to. I just hate shopping.

5. Are/were you a good student?

I used to be an average student when I wouldn't study. Now I apply myself and do pretty well.
