The Friday Five

1. What is your preferred method of keeping up with local, national and international news?
2. Does the media's bias (real or imagined) influence your preferred method of getting news information?
3. Have you ever been in the newspaper or on television?
4. What's the biggest news event that ever occured in the town you live in?
5. If someone of note (like Bush) were to come to your town, would you go see them?

1) TV or Online.

2) There's PLENTY of bias out there on all sides. Especially online, where facts don't necessarily have to be true to report them. Yes, the TRUTH affects how/where I get my news.

3) Yep, I've had a couple Police Blotter mentions (good & bad) along with a mention when my godmother/first cousin was murdered in 1982.

4) Nationally, was a HUGE lottery payout ticket sold at a little store by the lake here. Guy was from Ill-Annoy, and this place was a media ZOO! Locally, the naked guy wearing just an American flag, brandishing a pistol, and making people salute him a few 4th of Julys ago. (It was NOT me!)

5) Yep, and I'd probably heckle & be asked to leave (What about the working class people Mr. President???!!!)

1. The internets, of course.
2. Yes, TV news is for the ignorant.
3. Yeah, when I graduated high school.
4. I have no clue.
5. If I liked them, then yes. If not, then yes.. Except it would be to heckle them, spit at them, etc.

5. If someone of note (like Bush) were to come to your town, would you go see them?

1. Fox News , or local news, whatever. I default to Fox News though, television being the prime media through which I get news (especially if it's weather related).

2. Hello, I watch Fox News

3. No, but I could've if I wanted to.

4. Waco Massacre

5. Bush came to my campus back in 2004, I was probably 1/4 mile away from him at one point. I slept through his visit, didn't even go to class either.

5. If someone of note (like Bush) were to come to your town, would you go see them?

1. IRC newschannels and newspapers.
2. If I say no I would be lying. I try to be critical and check the source of the news.
3. Yes. In the local paper probably 3-4 times and on one occasion my feet were shown in the front page of a national tabloid magazine. Plus couple of times in the TV, the last time was about the snow sculpting contest.
4. When a container of acrylic nitrate exploded some years ago. The whole village was told to be evacuated, I was sitting in my cellar drinking beer. Later on I heard the evacuation order was unnecessary. Nevetheless, the beer was good.
5. Yes if I would have something to ask him/her. I wouldn't go just for the sake of seeing him/her.

1. I go directly to CP, AP, and Reuter's member sites
2. I work in media...so, I'm part of the influencing :P
3. Yes, both.
4. Hmmm...The Flood of '97, The Blizzard of '97, the '99 Pan-Am Games, murder/arson/auto theft/poverty capital of Canada...Winnipeg is one great city :D
5. Perhaps. It would all depend on the person.

2. Depends on my mood.
3. No, but my name was mentioned with a picture of my family in a 9/11 documentary. I was 15 minutes away from actually being in it.
4. There were "riots" in my school earlier in the school year. They weren't actual "riots" but just big fights that got blown out of proportion. But it became huge news and there were even rumors spread in some other school districts that some teachers were killed, but that didn't last for very long.
5. If the person's worth seeing, then yes.

1. What is your preferred method of keeping up with local, national and international news?

Internet sources, usually. If my daughter's out of the room, I'll watch the local on the tele.

2. Does the media's bias (real or imagined) influence your preferred method of getting news information?

Yes

3. Have you ever been in the newspaper or on television?

Several times in the newspaper. In high school for soccer. In my job, I'm getting into more and more papers as the evil tower builder guy.

4. What's the biggest news event that ever occured in the town you live in?

Probably the State Penn riots in '80, I think the year was. And some Roosevelt Park violence during Viet Nam. Lately, there was a ton of flooding last year (we live in a desert, mind you), and the US Attorney firings is the current hot topic since our state attorney was one of those fired.

5. If someone of note (like Bush) were to come to your town, would you go see them?

We've had plenty of presidential visits, but I've never been so inclined to go to one. I haven't been to see a speaker for quite some time. Now, concerts on the other hand... I did see Kerry's motorcade rip through the city in front of my family van back in the last presidential race though.

Please explain

I'm a voluntary fireman. Or I used to be before I moved away from my home village. On the highway nearby happened a bad accident where a big truck collided with some cars. The truck container was full of clothes and they were burning. My job was to punch some holes through the metal and inject water into the container with a thin nozzle.

I was on top of the container doing this while the picture was taken.

A woman and two 10-year old girls were going to swim and they were turning away from the highway. The truck driver didn't see them in time (for some strange reasons) and ran over them. The car caught fire. It was the first time I saw dead bodies although it was very difficult to recognize them human anymore. :erk:

1. Blabbermouth.net (totally kidding :Smug: ) ummm, probably teh interwebz
2. Probably
3. I think I've been in the paper for something with school or something...
4. Nothing crazy that I can think of since I've been alive...
5. Bush? No. Symphony X? Definately...

4. What's the biggest news event that ever occured in the town you live in?
5. If someone of note (like Bush) were to come to your town, would you go see them?

1. The Internet and sometimes the newspaper. Screw television because the repetition of the same commercials ends up pissing me off.
2. I don't quite know...It's more like, the fact that I don't care about and/or see the point in most news and/or agree with opinions from certain sources makes me not care about these sources
3. When I was in 7th grade, I got in a local francophone newspaper for being the first Acadian to dominate a provincial mathematics contest. I'm such a nerd:p
4. I live in Toronto right now, and I don't know the answer.
5. If I go see Bush make a speech, it would either be by mistake, out of having nothing better to do or through the scope of a sniper rifle. Otherwise, it depends on if I like the person or not.

1. What is your preferred method of keeping up with local, national and international news?
Various online sources, and the occasional tv news show.
2. Does the media's bias (real or imagined) influence your preferred method of getting news information?
Nope, I'd like to believe that I'm capable enough of thinking for myself that I can process the basic info without the bias being a problem.
3. Have you ever been in the newspaper or on television?
Several times for both.
4. What's the biggest news event that ever occured in the town you live in?
For the general area, probably misc. events regarding President Ford, whose museum (and gravesite) are in nearby Grand Rapids.
5. If someone of note (like Bush) were to come to your town, would you go see them?
It'd depend on who it was.

5. If someone of note (like Bush) were to come to your town, would you go see them?

1. Internet, since I'm always on it. But I watch TV too.
2. Yes. Always been a CNN person.
3. An article I wrote way back in 7th grade was published.
4. Can't remember. Must not have been that important, hehe.
5. Yes, but it would depend on whom. I would have gone to see President Clinton when he came to our town, but I was in class then.

September eleventh I guess.

5. If someone of note (like Bush) were to come to your town, would you go see them?
Depends on the person, but I might try to swing by wherever for a quick look-see as long as it wasn't too far out of my way.

1. What is your preferred method of keeping up with local, national and international news?
Online for convenience.

2. Does the media's bias (real or imagined) influence your preferred method of getting news information?
No.

3. Have you ever been in the newspaper or on television?
Local paper I'm sure.

4. What's the biggest news event that ever occured in the town you live in?
Honestly I couldn't name one at all. Boring place really.

5. If someone of note (like Bush) were to come to your town, would you go see them?
Sure wouldn't. Don't quite understand why people would either, even if it's someone respectful. Meeting someone properly maybe, but if it's just catching a glimpse?... I'd much rather go catch up with a mate or listen to music.

A fitting Five made up by yours truly as I prepare to travel to Cali this morning for BARfest (I'll still have 'net access while I'm away for the weekend, though, so behave yourselves!)..

1. What's the farthest you've ever traveled to see a band/show/festival?
2. What's the farthest you'd be willing to travel?
3. Which band would you be most willing to travel to see?
4. Ever followed a band to see multiple consecutive dates of a single tour?
5. If you could choose the perfect band playing in the perfect location, which band would it be & where would they play?
