You can't ruin the ending! It's always different depending on how you played the game. If you just rush it, you'll get one ending. If you collect all stuff, you get another one. There's like 7 endings to the game I think.
Now to the 1.6 vs Source debate: I play both. But I like source more. Probably cause I'm a graphics nerd. I love awesome-looking games. Like Crysis and Far Cry 2. Yeah I know the story in Crysis sucks, but it's beautiful. :')

I like horrorgames cause nothing scares me more. I like to be reminded that even I (Satan) can be frightened.
But I like to kill the shit out of COCKy 10-year-olds with 1337-hacks and thier parents computers. If I don't kill them in-game I just pay them a visit with my friend Mr. Reaper. :')
I am also an RPG fan although I stick to the Western brand nowadays. Still I've played almost every game on your list. I still love the SNES RPG lineup as well, Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger were the games that started me on RPG's and I never stopped playing them. Xenogears is my favorite Japanese RPG, overall though I'd have to say Morrowind or Fallout 3 are my favorite overall RPG's. I'm really into modding, and I love freedom in games more than anything. So both Morrowind and Fallout 3 got hundreds of hours from me both playing and modding them.
Since folks are listing their favorite games I may as well too. This list could change since it's off the top of my head but:

4. GTA 4 (A game I also modded to insane extents)

I'm playing Duke Nukem 3D all modernized with a source port (eDuke) and high res textures. I love this game and I'm glad my parents were liberal enough to let me play it as a kid lol

HoMM3 though has such a huge replayability is ridiculous, you'll just have to get some friends start playing it as well

as stefan (SDD) said, there are at least 7 different endings, so it can't really be ruined, play it maddafakka! one of the greatest games ever made.

ah nice, i just got Doom on my ipod touch and LOVED IT, reminded me of playing it with my dad as a kid (lol i wasnt allowed scary movies, but doom, yeah why not
)loved GTA4, it was such a step up, if they combined GTA4 an d san andreas it would be a perfect game
